charger

A battery charger, or recharger, is a device that stores energy in a battery by running an electric current through it. The charging protocol (how much voltage or current for how long, and what to do when charging is complete) depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging (i.e., continued charging after the battery has been fully charged) and can be recharged by connection to a constant voltage source or a constant current source, depending on battery type. Simple chargers of this type must be manually disconnected at the end of the charge cycle. Other battery types use a timer to cut off when charging should be complete. Other battery types cannot withstand over-charging, becoming damaged (reduced capacity, reduced lifetime), over heating or even exploding. The charger may have temperature or voltage sensing circuits and a microprocessor controller to safely adjust the charging current and voltage, determine the state of charge, and cut off at the end of charge.
Chargers may elevate the output voltage proportionally with current to compensate for impedance in the wires.A trickle charger provides a relatively small amount of current, only enough to counteract self-discharge of a battery that is idle for a long time. Some battery types cannot tolerate trickle charging; attempts to do so may result in damage. Lithium-ion batteries cannot handle indefinite trickle charging.
Slow battery chargers may take several hours to complete a charge. High-rate chargers may restore most capacity much faster, but high rate chargers can be more than some battery types can tolerate. Such batteries require active monitoring of the battery to protect it from overcharging. Electric vehicles ideally need high-rate chargers. For public access, installation of such chargers and the distribution support for them is an issue in the proposed adoption of electric cars.

Can you remove charger cable 'Caddy'

After 3+ years I thought I'd see if the granny charger worked and where I could fit it in the garage. I found the perfect place to mount it in the garage but the Caddy Cable 'Ears' stuck out too far and could be hit if returning the wheelie bit out of line. So I would like to remove the Caddy...

First long run out and thumbs up

Six weeks into S5 ownership and following on from FL5SE and 4XP I’m very happy. First full trip down to Cornwall, three adults, dog and a boot full, brimmed the tank at home. 200 miles to the first charge stop as planned, motorway all the way, GOM gave 319 at the start, got there with 37% left...

    Charger suggestion

I might be doing a long trip from Bristol to Hartlepool in a while, it's 280 miles so we'll need a charge at some point along the way. Does anyone have any suggestions for a pleasant place to stop? E.g. a park or lake to stretch the legs, or nice cafe or something? Ideally somewhere between...

Do I need to carry cable?

All of my charging except one occasion has been on my granny charger at home. That one occasion was from a High Street charger, before I received the granny charger, and that charger was "tethered". Can anyone think of any reason why I am carrying around the big heavy charging cable in my...

Slightly OT, but seeking the advice of those who have Solar PV AND a battery

As per the title, this is slightly OT but I thought the combined experience of users who have Solar PV and at least one battery might be able to advise me! We currently have the panels and the required invertor and everything works well, I'm very pleased with the investment. Unfortunately, at...

    Where’s the charger cable ?

Hi I bought a 2nd hand MG SV electric a month ago. There were no cables supplied. After a lot of pleading I got the home charger. But while outside I needed to charge but I need the charge cable for service stations. Seems most charge points don’t have charge cables. I was told by the sales...

How does the 12V charger work?

Anyone have any info on how the 12V charger works? The manual says it "intelligently" keeps the 12V battery topped up, but doesn't go into detail. I'm just wondering how well it works with a dashcam in parking mode. Can I leave it on full power, recording video for hours while I'm parked away...

EV Life, Two Years On (No Home Charger)

Having owned an EV for just over two and a half years, I realised the other day how much my concern about range and charge level has dropped (pardon the pun). For those with home chargers this might not seem such a big deal, but I’m one of the few living in a London flat and relying entirely on...

Home charger problem with i-store EV charger

I've just had an i-store EV charger fitted, which seems to work fine. However I'm having trouble adjusting it.
