Hi all,
Hope someone can help, 59k miles in an MG4 and there is much I love but there are a few things on the wish list.
Took a test drive in the MGS5 and it ticks so many extra boxes but...

The dealer insists the cruise control will adapt the speed in response to the speed limit signs. I asked more than once, and he was insistent this is true. The MG4 doesn't and I really want it!

I couldn't trigger it on the test drive and the dealer couldn't explain how, although he used it as his daily.

It's one of the things are that top of the wish list, is he right?

It doesn't quite work this way.
The functionality is intelligent speed limit assistance meaning that you can automatically limit your speed dependant on recognised speed limit signage.

I would point out that the speed detection system is not good. I drove from Morden to Biggin Hill this evening and I would say that the displayed speed limit was wrong 2/3 of the time.

The main thing is does is to pick up the signs from side roads. So if you are driving in a 30, but the side roads are 20, it will see one and say you are in a 20. More often than not, sadly.

That's was my experience too.

I have found this too, there is a stretch of road on the A75 where the camera picks up a 40MPH sign, but I've not seen where it is. It carries on flashing until it picks up a 60 sign. Not to be trusted.
I have to say that the Kona I had two MG4's back did the same thing.

I had a VW ID.4 prior to the MGS5 and before that a second gen Nissan Leaf. Both of them . . same thing. If the camera could SEE a speed sign anywhere its field of view, that's the speed limit.

Thank you, just like my MG4. This and a pani roof might lead me to an Atto 3...
I would add the MGS5 will use in car navigation for speed limits too which come from google maps. I don’t know if you can disable the camera detection though.

Example of a road in Edinburgh where you do not want the car changing speed based on road signs. Road to the left is a 20 mph zone whilst the road you are on is a 30mph zone. Guess what the car will assume about the road you are on when it passes the road on the left...

TBF that sign placement is very bad. I dont think any system would be able to work with that.
It should have been placed further in, like 5 meters from the intersection.

But hey, im not defending the mgs5. I have issues with it reading a 40 sign as 20 here in town. The sign is very new and there has been no glare or other things that would explain why it struggles with it. After seeing the same issue occur in another town i think it has problems with certain digits..

I have found that Google Maps "knowledge" of the speed limit is almost faultless. (Not absolutely 100% but far, far better than this system). Would it not be possible to use that data source?

Possible, yes. But i doubt anyone uses anything else than image parsing as road signs are not a constant thing. As soon as you have changes then everything breaks if you base your logic on a third party database.

I only discovered today that, while the ACC can be changed in 1 mph increments, the speed limiter can only work in 5s, which is a pain given that the police threshold for prosecution in the UK is 10% + 2, so 35mph is a prosecution in 30, but if you drive at 30 there'll always be a BMW right on your bumper "encouraging" you to go faster, meaning that 33 is a more sensible limit.

No, 30 is the sensible speed, and f*** the beamer driver. Anyone trying to bully me like that finds me getting gradually slower and slower.

While I might occasionally be tempted to behave like that, I resist, because I know from experience that it is potentially dangerous.

First of all they are likely to make an ill judged overtake, putting themselves, me and other road users in danger, and then they are likely to exhibit road rage, cutting in, brake checks and so on.

In my humble opinion, it isn't worth it

I've had 2 speed limits appear side by side. Anyone else experienced this?

Was this the kind of thing sir had in mind?

(Edited to say that that photo was taken shortly after Chris Grayling was appointed Transport Secretary. It seemed emblematic.)
