Carrying out some christmas googling to understand why two different android phones were becoming broken up and slow to load in my MG5 Facelift and MGS5when using android auto.
I came across a forum which discussed how your phone high resoltion settings 120HZ can affect the Android Auto performance.
So I unticked all the hi-res options in my phone display settings and Android Auto is running smoothly.
To me this works because google setup android auto for lower resultion head units.
The phones I have tested this with are a Sony Xperia 5V and TCL NxtPaper 50 Pro.
Hope this little hack helps other android auto users.
