Hiya. We’ve just bought an MGS5 trophy and the boot will only lock properly it the car is on, as in with a door open or something. If the car is off, like we’ve just pulled up to the house and every gets out, we empty the boot, press the boot close and it shuts but doesn’t lock so it says the boot is open on the screen. Any ideas? The second key is kept away and we’ve tried it with the key near and far away and it’s the same. The boot just doesn’t lock all the time?

Certainly not normal behaviour.
Can't be a physical obstruction because that would affect it all the time.
What happens when you just open & close the boot when the rest of the car is locked?

Does it beep at you when you lock the car? The tailgate is only locked when the car is locked. If you have the keys on you the tailgate will always open via the button or the foot waving thing,

Thanks all for replying. Apparently it’s just an MG thing! As long as the whole car is unlocked first before closing the boot then the boot will lock. If the car is locked and we just open the boot on its own, it won’t lock when we close it. Just something to get used to!

I have tried all combinations of car locked/unlocked, key in pocket/not in pocket etc and mine locks every time. The only time it shuts and then re opens a small amount is if the key is left in the car. So you can’t accidentally lock the key in the boot when you put shopping in! The MG5 system was similar although manual boot lid.

I agree with Alb, that’s a fault. My MGS5 Trophy does not behave like that. If the car is locked the boot opens ( when you have the key) with the foot sensor or the handle and then shuts and locks as it should do.

I have the MG3 hybrid and that boot works the same way. If the car is locked I can open the boot with the button and it locks itself when I close it.

Thanks all, we agree it doesn’t sound right! We’ve got it booked in tomorrow so will let you know what they say.

So it turned out to the the boot latch, they’ve moved it forward and now it latches every time. they also said it’s meant to be a slow close boot so the fact it was slamming shut when the doors were open were right either! But all sorted now hopefully

sounds like the closure sensor not adjusted right. If the boot is closing then it's locked. I f someone can try opening the boot without the key being within range it will prove it.

Someone on Facebook had the same problem. Something to add to my check list when I pick mine up this morning 😁

Just picked mine up and the tailgate had the same problem as @Cluckers. i.e. it wasn't locking when closed with either the button or the key fob. I also didn't think it was opening as high as it should.

After forcing the tailgate to its maximum height by pushing it up gently until it stopped and then helping it to start shutting again (it wouldn't move and gave a warning beep) it seems to have cured the problem. It now soft closes and locks whether the rest of the car is locked or unlocked.

I wonder if the perimeters needed resetting similar to resetting auto open and close windows.
