Can you set the boot to unlock with the rest of the car? - S5 Excite

I've had my S5 for a couple of months here in Oz and mostly I love it, but it has a couple of idiosyncrasies which I find quite annoying. The main one is that the boot can only be opened by physically pressing the boot unlock button on the key fob, even if the rest of the car is unlocked. Even if I've just climbed out of the unlocked vehicle, I still have to fumble around for the key fob to get the boot open. Does anyone know if there's a setting I can change? Thanks in advance for any help!

Really surprised by that, our MG4 is very different, even if the vehicle is locked, you only need to be near the car with key in pocket and the boot will open. And it certainly unlocks when when car is unlocked.

So I feel there should be something you can do about it, hope somebody comes on and tells you how.

I'm intrigued so just checked the manual.
"
Manual tailgate can be opened by the following 2 ways:
1 Make sure that the driver's seat is not occupied before
opening the tailgate with the button on the key. Long
press the tailgate open button ( B ) on the key for more
than 2 s to unlock the tailgate, then lift and open the
tailgate;

2 When the vehicle is unlocked or the matched key
appears within 1 m range around the tailgate, directly
press the open switch ( A ) on the tailgate to open the
tailgate.

So the manual says it's supposed to work the same as our MG4.
Looks like you may have a fault, I'd get in touch with MG

Yeah, that definitely doesn't work, and there doesn't appear to be any 'open switch (A)' on the tailgate - it's not like my dear, very old, Subaru Forester where you unlocked the car with one button, and the boot had a latch which enabled you to open it at any time until the whole car was locked again. That's all I want. With the S5, you have to press the boot unlock button on the fob, there's an audible click, and only then you can lift the boot, but if you close it again, you have to use the key fob to open it again even if the car is unlocked. Anyway, thanks again for your reply.

I feel like such an idiot! ... It seemed unlikely that your manual was wrong, or that the S5 would be radically different in this respect so I just went out and had another poke around. I had been pulling up on the moulding in the middle of the tailgate (I think it's the reverse camera mounting) and nothing was happening. But it turns out that there is, in fact, a latch - it's just not where I was expecting - it's slightly offset to the drivers side and I just hadn't found it. In my defence, there's still quite a lot I'm learning about this car. As I mentioned above, until very recently I was driving a very old Subaru, so a lot of the tech on the MG feels very strange and unfamiliar. Thanks very much decrep - you effectively answered my question. Have a wonderful New Year!

There is also a third option if you have the motorised tailgate - swipe down on the infotainment screen to bring up the shortcuts, then press “tailgate”.

Thanks guys, I'm delighted to have finally worked it out - with a little help ;) Unfortunately, I don't have the motorised tailgate - if I had, I'd just be doing the foot-swipey thing.

I've switched that off. Trying to get the correct foot swipe and nearly over balancing combined with accidentally closing it when reaching for something towards the back of the boot was more trouble than it was worth.

Also, its not a cool look to stand at the back of your car and give it a good kicking ...especially when it doesn't want to open!
It makes MG owners look a bit mad ...which some of us are.
