I wanted a rubber boot mat but not a moulded one. Got a piece of 1m square by 3mm thick rubber matting from ebay (£9) and was going to cut it to size, but found it folded nicely up the sides, and I was able to protect the inner sill with it. The 3mm sheet fits under the closed tailgate without a problem. Just had to cut out for the latch. Sheet cuts ok with (ex)kitchen scissors. Helps if the rubber is warm (fitted on a mild sunny day....)
