Curious display error

Driving yesterday on a mild and quite pleasant day we noticed the outside temperature display was showing -40! This seemed to have no affect on the car's heating and everything was comfortable and normal inside. Also we noticed that the time information had disappeared too. Once home I restarted the car and the fault was still there so I turned it off and left it. Thankfully it had all returned to normal when I went back to it a few hours later and it's ok today.

Anyone else had spurious display errors or is it something to be expected with these mobile computers we all drive these days?
