Electric cars will be cheaper to buy

BBC News - Electric cars will be cheaper to buy, pledges Heidi Alexander - BBC News
But don't hold your breath
I doubt they will introduce generous grants for EV purchases like in France.

However, support for chargers would be great, particularly charging for the installation of charging gullies in terrace streets.

The grants are being drastically reduced and restricted for new EV uptake here. But like the UK there is now a more level playing field and almost parity of prices , especially in the secondhand market. The recent addition of decent French built and well regarded EVs has helped in what is a partisan auto economy. Again the same concerns which worry UK adopters is replicated here despite the carrot and stick approach from the government.

In Norway they achieved price parity [and made them more appealing generally] by offering many things including:
  • No VAT and import taxes on EVs (all cars are imported and taxed heavily when doing so, making this a massive discount in comparison to ICE cars)
  • Massive investment in charging infrastructure
  • Right to ride in bus lanes for EV drivers
As long as the costs are similar (which they are getting to now, as @Kenp1 notes, particularly over time with cheaper running costs) and the infrastructure is reliable then people will switch.

Now the focus should be on making it easier for people without driveways to switch, which seems to be the focus here with the subsidies for gullies and local council installations.
