Collision avoidance assist - as previously reported by several posts there are many common software glitches. One that concerns me that has not been validated is forward collision avoidance assist, I’m not convinced this is working. The only time the car adapts speed/brakes is when in cruise control. Other than this, I have almost banged into car in front and there seems to be no intervention. Has anyone experienced this?

Assume you are talking about Forward Collision Assist?
There's a huge list of caveats in the owner's manual so it's best to check them first but if you still think it isn't working, get your hands on some large (empty) cardboard boxes and do your own dynamic test!

I had a slightly odd thing today.

I went to park at the side of the road and having driven into a bay, I then reversed back about three bays, and, as I did, a car coming in the opposite direction came in and followed me in, so as to end up bumper to bumper in the next bay. (He was driving forward, I was reversing, just to be clear).

But at some point in that process my car jammed its brakes on, presumably because it thought that that other car was getting too close. It was a bit weird.

Mine works, I think it has been coded to provide a lot less false positives than in my previous MG4. The 5S triggered this moiring on the way in to work when someone moved from the oncomin traffic in to my lane to pass a bus without enough room. I was comfortable with the response and response time

Mine is back in the garage for the third time next week to look into this..
I've got a video of me running over a large cardboard box at about 20mph
No intervention at all..
I've also had a very near miss, when FCA didn't even beep, let alone brake.
The dealer has said there are no errors, so not much they can do, but are investigating again...

Thanks for the info, my guess is that it’s a software glitch, common in all

Let us know if you get anywhere with it…

So dealer had another look yesterday and just took calibration settings etc.. to submit to MG
I am convinced this FCA does not work at all, which is concerning and it seems as though if there are no visible errors indicated in the logs, then there is nothing they can do
I do wonder if this needs to be reported to the DVSA/VOSA/Thatcham as I am sure this feature is key to the NCAP safety score....

im not convinced the FCA is working at all either. Adaptive cruise control works ok, meaning the front sensor works at least.

Agreed, my Intelligent Cruise controls also seems to work, though it does seem to leave a very large gap to the vehicle in front.
So the ADAS sensors are working, just not as advertised..in relation to the FCA

You can change the distance it leaves in front via the steering wheel buttons on the left, between 1 and 3 bars, 3 being the largest distance

Regarding the gap, this seems to be somewhat dynamic. I was driving in rush hour yesterday with cruise enabled and it was holding back about 4-5m from the car infront. Apart from that, i have the same experience that even on one bar, it keeps well back from other cars on the motorway, sometimes leading to others pulling into the gap :\

I agree the gap is tempting to others to slot in to on a motorway but it feels like the right distance on 1 bar and 3 in the rain.

It's definitely better calibrated that my MG4 where it always felt a bit closer than I would like and slower to respond, especially when speeding up.

Overall, I like it and and pretty happy with the implementation

The main concern is whether the FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE ASSIST is actually working… this is a major safety concern and my fear is that it’s not working but it’s very difficult to confirm this without driving into something or someone??

I agree, I used to get lots of warning beeps in my FL5 (cars on sharp bends cars coming from the left at junctions etc), but I haven't had one in my S5. So either the system is vastly improved or it isn't working, might have to try the large cardboard idea.
