When I was 15 in NZ back in the 60s petrol was 2 shillings & 6 pence a IMP gallon or 25 cents after decimalisation. But then average wages were 17 to 20 quid a week.

Unleaded 91 has just gone up to $1.96 a litre from $1.70 something a week or so ago. 95 & 98 are well over $2.00. The latest oil prices are now are the benchmak Brent Crude at $US114.20/barrel 10 minutes ago,

I remember when petrol was less than £1 per gallon.

when I started it was 33p a gallon.

It was around 1979/1980 when it broke the £1/gallon, I remember it as I naively thought I would never see it go that high.

Have a look at the table attached below showing price per gallon for every year since 1896 and see if it matches your memory.
