On collection of my IM5, I asked the salesman if there was a heat pump on the car, to bring the battery up to temp before use, to get the most efficiency, I was told YES, but he didn't know how to activate it?
I've since noticed that if I drive it first thing, my consumption is 2kW until the car warms up, yet if I activate the climate control for 30 mins before use, I'll be getting 3.7+ from the start, so does warming the car with the climate control, also activate the heat pump to get the battery up to optimum temp?
Thx in advance..

All the IMs have a heat pump. I am not sure what you mean by activating it? These are passive heating/cooling systems focused on heating or cooling the interior of the car in the most efficient way.
What you notice with the preheating greatly improving your fuel efficiency is down to the automated heating system which IM has implemented for battery warming up. As you precondition the car the battery also warms up. If you don't the system activates itself to warm up the battery and uses battery charge. Unfortunately it's fully automated and pretty useless imo.

Heat pump and battery heating are separate things. Then heat pump is used to warm the cabin. There is a heater to warm the battery but no user control We have been told it operates if the battery temp gets to 5 deg C… Warming the car simply brings the cabin up to temp so less energy is needed at the start.

I do not thin that is true. There is no battery heating AFAWK preconditioning just heats up the cabin.

@MikeJS. Well maybe only IM know? The guy who did my handover certainly didn't, then again, he couldn't answer any of my questions.

The battery heater according to IM only switches on if the battery temp gets to 5 deg C.
