I had one of the early EO mini pro 2 chargers installed by octopus. The app was always iffy and finally it stopped completely. They did set it up to be fully on 24/7 but not ideal. And of course out of warranty so octopus didn't want to help.So I bought a cheap charger from eBay and it works ok ish. Via smart home, which is also a bit iffy but between the charger and the MG app, I can program an overnight charge on Octopus go. I can put 30% in each night at a cost of about £3.

With Octopus Intelligent Go that should be £2.10, or about £2.50 with standard Octopus Go.
 
We're on Octopus Go. I'm not happy about using the "intelligent" tarrifs just yet. So 5 hours at 8.5p/kWh X 7kW is about £3. It's even cheaper to charge during the day than use any public charging!

What is your concern about the intelligent tariff? I have used it for years without any issue with a OHME charger.
 
We don't have a compatible charger & I like to be more in charge. We export too, not sure I can have a different tarrif. We export at 15p/kWh.

You can definitely have an export tariff with OIG. Also on OIG you choose the % charge you want and let Octopus get on with it. Does mean that you can get cheap slots outside of the standard 2330 to 0530.

If you really wanted full control you'd go Octopus Agile.

And as the other guy said, you don't have to wait for overnight either to get cheap energy for your car, I can literally plug in any time and as long as there is excess capacity on the grid it'll dump it in the car @ £0.07 per kWh. You're not limited on charging at a certain time either, if you need to charge the car now you can charge it straight away, you just pay for it.

With Agile you could control it on a 30 minute basis - or set up automation with IFTTT via Home Assistant. You actually have less control now than you think compared to others on the Intelligent or Agile tariffs, with standard Octopus Go you're locked into cheap electric only between 00:30 and 05:30, and outside that good luck, especially on a car with a 100kWh battery with a 7kWh home charger.

With Intelligent Go the chances of you charging from 0% to 100% are actually way more realistic in a 24 hour period vs. what you have now. Yeah I know it's rare that most people do it, but I do sometimes with things like airport trips.

Might be worth running the numbers on upgrading your charger vs. the cost of a couple of years at the lower rate - you might be surprised how quickly the new charger will pay for itself, it was the calculation I did vs. 3-pin plug charging when I got my XPOWER.

I can still control how much power goes to the grid, to my eddi, or zappi. As you can imagine with an XPOWER you charge quite a bit, which will change a bit when my IM5 LR arrives, but then again it's got a much larger battery so it'll be a case of charging for longer but much less often.

The thing to bear in mind for anyone thinking of going on IOG is the extra hours aren't always guaranteed, as you say if the grid is green you have more of a chance.
If you aren't adding a massive amount of charge it will still default to mainly core charging hours

Depends where you live of course, but there is a lot of off-shore wind available to the East Mids region, so it works really well for me. Yesterday it was miserable and the sun was barely out, and wasn't windy, it still put 5kWh in during the day, and then added a load more overnight, all while being cheaper than standard Go.

I know because I've had both.

And then the fallback is still the extra hour of overnight cheap electric you get too - so not only does the car charge then too, but often throughout the day even in winter, and then overnight I also heat my hot water with my heat pump, and then if it needs any top up the eddi takes care of it, but it rarely needs to. Next step is a battery for the house to dump that cheap power in overnight, then the heat pump can use that cheaper rate too.

This weekend it'll be be sunny here according to the forecasts, which means the solar farms will be working, so I'd imagine there will be a lot of slots in OIG, as a cool day with sun is very good for solar as it makes the panels most efficient.

As for not adding a lot of charge, anyone with a 100kWh battery car knows how long they take to charge at home.

Thanks. I'm fairly happy with my set up. I bought a charger & installed it. It is reasonably controllable. I have a Powerwall 3 and a new app for it so I can control it's import/export quite well. I'll look out for any charger offers in the future.
 
I am on Intelligent Octopus Go, but I don't use the intelligent part. I just charge in the core hours via my Zappi. I have to periodically connect to the Octopus app and do an "intelligent" charge to keep the tariff.

The reason I stopped using the "intelligent" bit was:
  • Several occasions where it just failed to charge, complaining it couldn't control my Zappi.
  • The fragmentation of the charging hours became quite ridiculous and I didn't like the wear and tear aspects of lots of short charging periods through the night.

Since I just went back to using my Zappi's own scheduling, it has been rock solid and always charged (bar one exception).
 
Hey @WMOAP does the ventilation on your wireless charging pad work? Mine blows no air and the phone gets HOT. I can find no information in the manual but the specification's clearly state it’s a ventilated pad

Just a short intro - thanks for letting me join. I've had my IM5 about 3 weeks now, I originally wanted the LR version - but refused to pay the govt luxury tax extra of £400 from next year for 5 years - that's on top of the standard £195 it will be next year - so I opted for the standard range. I am an OAP from the West Midlands but feel fairly tech savvy for my age. This is my 4th ev, I do have niggles/questions already, but I really do enjoy the IM5 in all aspects and have no regrets from purchasing one. I've attached a couple of pictures of my car in Nevis Blue.

Anyway I will post my own niggles and any questions - are there many people on here owning IM5/IM6's? - are there any knowledgeable people who are ok with software niggles/issues on the IM range? - hope so, of course if I can help anyone with my 3 week experience of being an IM5 owner I will.

Hi, purchased by black pearl IM5 2 weeks ago, first EV after trading in my Jag XE 24 plate. Wanted to move into the world of EV's and hate SUV's. Just think the shape of the IM is better than the Tesla and BYD Seal. My IM is the standard model which will cover 99% of my journeys with home charging at 7.5pKwHr😊. saw no reason to be hit with the over £40k tax.

Only niggle so far still can't find how to set the headlights to auto beam/dip even though the manual shows the auto lamp indicator. Getting no help from MG customer services and the garage just shrugs their shoulders😤, hoping someone on the site can point me in the right direction.
