Well, this is it , could be the end? With no knowledge what so ever I'm dumping Windows 10 for Linux Mint on my old computer which won't do 11. I could end up lost in internet space like the Matrix, forever fighting Mr Smith whilst you lot witter on about the latest MG 12 with its new hyperon batteries. Read all the articles , got my USB sticks and assorted tools , left handed screwdriver , chocolate hammer etc , and would like to say I look forwards to all the insults aimed my way , if I get them I'll see it as a win! Wish me luck , I'm going in.........

Brave lad, may your chocolate hammer hit the sweet spot 👌
Good luck.

I once had LM dual installed with W10, and could select the boot option from the boot loader menu. :) You need to partition your drive first though, so LM has somewhere to install to. (And installing LM after W10 makes configuring the boot loader quite easy, compared with trying it the other way).

That said, W10 is getting another year of free updates for EU users. So there's no hurry to ditch it yet.

Agree, happily running Windows 11 on two computers that Microsoft say aren't capable of running it. Plus have ditched the Microsoft bloatware at same time. Plenty of information on the web on various ways of doing this.

I use Linux Mint exclusively, no big deal.
Yes it's NOT windoze, there is a bit of a learning curve.
Windows programs won't run on it, but there are lots of linux alternatives.
As siteguru says you can dual boot.
Not a bad idea until you are sure you can ditch windows. You can use mint for your online work and keep any unsupported OS off the net.

This is a fantastic forum with lots of good help for beginners.

I haven't used Windows for years. I've gone down the Chromebook route which has the advantage of being able to pair with my android phone.

I enabled the Linux development environment so I could download LibreOffice and my preferred password safe.

The only disadvantage is my old HP laser printer isn't compatible so any printing, which is rare nowadays, I have to copy to a USB drive and plug it into the old windows laptop which no longer has internet access for security reasons as it has no ant-virus software installed and I don't want Mr Microsoft downloading updates that I don't want or need.

I don't connect my W10 laptop to the internet, works fine running the odd bit of legacy software. Now use a MacBook Air for everything else with the advantage that iPad and iPhone work seamlessly with it

I've dual-booted Windows (XP, 7, 10) with Ubuntu on my 17 year-old Laptop and 18 year-old Netbook using LibreOffice, Thunderbird and Firefox for commonality. Needed to upgrade to a new Windows 11 Laptop because supported 32bit code is becoming harder to find. Ditching the laptop as the screen is detaching from the base but keeping the Netbook.

I recently totally bricked my old WIn 10 PC whilst mucking about. Tried to re-install from scratch various OS including Win 10 and Winux (Windows theme over Linux so looks and runs almost like Windows.
Due to aforementioned bricking all failed to properly install. I then came across Windows 11 Lite. There are a few versions such as Tiny 11, non Microsoft supported. I installed this without problem and is now working fine on my old PC that I will still use for mucking about.
I have also some time ago (no longer have) had a dual boot Windows/Ubuntu for experimentation.

So there are options for that old PC and I would recommend the dual boot for first learning the Linux world.
