Is Your Car Spying On You?

Paranoia? 🤷‍♂️
Definitely not mate.
The MOD stripped a Chinese EV (IiRC it was an MG) after detecting a strange signal coming from somewhere on the base.
Whatever they found instigated the ban.

Sorry if that's a bit vague but it's been a while since I was told the story. By a mate who's a recently retired RAF fighter tech.

From 5 months ago.
An unusual warning has been issued to British soldiers after security officials raised concerns that military vehicles could be vulnerable to foreign surveillance.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has instructed personnel not to discuss sensitive information inside its fleet of official cars, following growing fears that Chinese-made technology embedded in global vehicle supply chains could be used for espionage.

The alert follows the discovery of a concealed Chinese tracking device in a UK government vehicle last year, a car reportedly used by then-prime minister Rishi Sunak.

But it's ok, now we have Kier Starmer in power, his constant U turns have drained the gps systems of all their power

I messaged my ex RAF mate & got this reply.

..."Not just MG, ALL Chinese makes. It happened at RAF Wyton they picked it up first and for security reasons it was turned out across the MOD. My mate [opposite] also told me the same, she is based at Lossiemouth"...

Another "some bloke down the pub said" story.

I can't see the MOD ordering cars from a dealer. They'd go direct to the manufacturer so the Chinese will know which cars need the special modification.

Every car manufactured since 2018 has had a tracker and a way to send the cars location to a call centre. Usually this would only activate in the event of a crash but you can manually activate it by pushing a button and if you are a hacker you could probably also get it to send data.

What has changed of course is who may have access to that data.
And of course it goes both ways. There is the possibility, because of updates needed for the cars (other makes included) these could all be switched off. Imagine a city full of dead cars on the streets. Oh the chaos!!
Possible, but not going to worry about it, just enjoying my driving and ignoring Fuel Stations price boards!!! And smiling!!!
