My understanding is that Jaguar looked at the EV transition and the threat of the Chinese and European competition and concluded they could not continue to compete as a volume car maker.

Many many people think fondly about old Jaguars and want them to continue to exist, but far too few people were actually buying new ones. When the famous nostalgic models actually came out in the 50s and 60s they were actually modern and cutting edge at the time, not nostalgic products, that came much later.

So Jaguar decided that they can't compete with their recent competitors (Mercedes, BMW, Audi et al) with EVs and there was no sense in becoming a classic car retro EV maker, so they decided to switch to being a very low volume luxury car maker, like Rolls and Bentley, making an few thousand cars a year globally.

Therefore this car isn't for the likes of any of us and they are aiming at a completely new to them high-end market.

I imagine most buyers will buy as an investment or be driven by a chauffeur.

We can disagree with the choices they have made but the fact is they felt they couldn't survive without a radical change.

They made a couple of slightly updated ICE ones, with the cost not listed but no doubt half a mil each.
