I've recently purchased a MG HS and when my partner tried her key to use the car the car unlocked fine but the car wouldn't start and the dash said "smart key not detected" and "place in backup position" does anyone have any idea how to resolve this?

It's worth trying a battery change in the keyfob, maybe the range has dropped in the cold weather?

That key needs to be programed which is done at the dealership. My dealership lost one of my keys on getting the car ready for me and ordered a replacement which I had done just before new year and take about 1 hour.

In my case with my Mg4, nothing helped ( changing the key fob batteries and reprogramming them. What helped was by changing the body control module and then reprogramming the keys.

You need to delete all the keys and then add the key again this will solve the issue. You wil need a tool which is able to do this , i have Xtool D8 which was able to reprogram the key.
