Plan to have a temporary car camper setup in mg 5 similar to one shown here :

Plan to cut out the plywood sheet for mattress of 105 cm W * 190cm L - can existing owners confirm this would work?

Keeping design simple so I can easily store plywood sheet when not in use.

Any other suggestions or improvements ?
I will send on pics once finished.

FYI, Mattress I will purchase, which should fit:
Amazon product ASIN B091DSDV6T

Hi
You may have to remove rear seat bases to lay back of seats reasonably flat if itโ€™s a long range
If itโ€™s a standard range you may have to lift the boot floor up as well

Hey Ian, I have ordered the long range. the supports that I will add at the bottom should overcome the height difference. The supports in the video are 7โ€ high. I donโ€™t want to be too invasive with the car. Plan to use this setup for weekends. So need to turn around install in 5 mins.

Hi
Very good on the mg5 LR
Hope it arrives soon for you
Yeah we go go camping so Iโ€™ve got a roof box
Itโ€™s more glamping really
Blow up tent,bed and sofa
Carpets
Electric hookup
Microwave, kettle, toaster, lighting, tv, radio, cool box and heaters etc etc
O and donโ€™t forget the dogs
๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
But worth it a home from home๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
Letโ€™s hope we get a good spring/summer this year
Hope you get it all sorted

If you manage to pull off the camper setup - it would be great if you could post pictures! It would be great to be able to show potential customers at our dealership creative ideas like this. Please share when you have updates. Thanks.

I also would be interested, as I thought it would be too short. I often lie in the back of cars with the seat down before I buy them...this is the shortest car I have owned for over 16 years and was one of my points I had to concede on when buying this time. I'm 5ft 6 but I do like to lie full length when sleeping so need to add extra for feet.

I'm also interested in this for the ZS EV Trophy. Can the heater be left to run all night long on a low heat?
Different forum but For the mg zs the Length of boot floor with back row of seats folded down or removed is 1520, according to following website. Does anyone have the mg 5 length?

I understand you now Ian. Removing the bases would help a lot and there are no tools needed. I believe these bases are connected to car frame using spring loaded clamps.

From another video the length available to my in the mg 5 is 1.8m. This should allow me to squeeze a standard 1.9m long memory foam mattress in.

Now all I need is a car ;)

I spent three months travelling around Europe in a camper this autumn, so Iโ€™ve got the bug.

Hi can you tell me if you can leave the heater on all night?

Don't see why not but you wouldn't have much battery range left in the morning and it would be a tad noisy I'd imagine!

I donโ€™t own an mg5 yet. I would suggest using insulation around windows before attempting to leave heat on all night. Body heat and insulation with a little heating from car would be the beat combination I would suggest

Yes I think you are right I would imagine that you would have the heat on low just really to fresh the air. I have seen Bjorn Nyland camp in electric cars and it seems to work for him.

You should be able to be self sufficient in a car and not use much heating/battery if you are doing 3 season camping. When sleeping in our MPV (ice vehicle) I don't use the van heating. Hot water bottle, good sleeping bag, thermals/hat (it is a large space so gets chilly) and roll mats cut to window size to provide insulation, privacy and blackout. Headtorches already charged so minimal internal lighting used. I can imagine if you use the MG5 HVAC before going to bed for a little while it would be comfortable for the rest of the night if insulated.

Had my first car camping experience in the mG 5 last night. Myself and the girlfriend who are both 5ft 10โ€™ just about fitted . It would not be possible to have two people if you are over 6 feet. It was too dark and wet to get photos of the finished result. Will make a video next time.

Components for bed:

How to :

Pull up back seat. Lift vertically with a little force. Remove back seat and boot privacy screen. Leave these in your house to maximise space.
Use 2 rubber mats to protect seats (see pic) and then fold down seats. Use remaining mats cut to size to ensure level surface for your mattress. Place two cabin suitcases on their side behind the seats. This doubles as storage and support for the top of your mattress.
Sorry forgot to get a pic of mattress inside car. It fits well. Make sure the mattress is not resting on the central console ( we learned that mistake at 3 in the morning). Push it towards the boot as much as possible.

For window insulation
  • A1 paper
  • aluminium insulation
  • plastic polyrib board
  • staples
  • glue gun to hide sharp staples.

How to:
Using A1 paper. Trace outline of windows. Cut polyrib board to size. Staple aluminium insulation to board. Use glue gun to cover staples. Videos online recommended glue insulation, however I found staples worked a treat.

To save time, I made entire piece of insulation which separated the front from the back. This meant I didnโ€™t need to insulate the front windows and windscreen separately. This worked well. I will probably add a few straps next time to ensure it is kept upright.

It was 7 deg C last night and we were nice and warm with the window slightly cracked open.
