MG - The UK's No1 Chinese Car Company (Auto Express)

BYD hit 4.27 Million sales and MG 1.08 and could hit 2 million this year. Toyota still top 10.9 Million vehicles per annum. Anything is possible with new models in the pipeline.

It could be that.

It could also be people value price over everything else. Or they have a good dealer.

Even though I know the typical experience, I'm still considering another MG.

The grass isn't always greener, there are a lot of complaints on every car's forums.
I'm one of those who had an MG4 with the charging problem that took months to fix but still exchanged it for another MG this year. In my case an MGS5 and so far I have no regrets.

I wouldn't say my dealer is the best but by going from what others have experienced they are above average.

And as for your first point, yes I do value price but it still has to be value for money and £10k off the list price for the MGS5 together with £14.5k part-ex for the MG4 (which is £3k more than they offered 2 months previously against a full price MGS5) was an offer that was hard to refuse.

My granddaughter goes to a performing arts school every Saturday. The take up of people buying EVs there is incredible. One of the guys who just bought a BYD was looking at my MGS5. Which he said he liked but didn’t even looks at MG because of their reputation for being unreliably and bad after sales service.

After more than four months of complaining to MG Motors about our MG4 bleeping, pulling the steering wheel to dive into the gutter and slamming the brakes on for no reason, I finally received the e-mail below from a Gary Smart in Customer Services who may not be a real person :-

Thank you for contacting MG Motor UK Ltd. and I am sorry to learn of your frustrations.

I do realise and understand why you would be frustrated, however, there is a reason why we need dealership interaction on each occasion.

We are not in a position to see or understand your concerns, and we do not know whether there is a phone compatibility problem, whether there is a fault within the system or the app or whether there are local connection concerns and so on.

It is important to visit the dealership and demonstrate to them, what is occurring, prior to leaving the vehicle with them for diagnosis.

I am also sorry to learn that MG Pilot systems are not meeting with your expectations. At this time, there is no evidence that these features are not behaving normally. If they are, there are certainly no concerns with the system that require changing and they are not dangerous.

These are features that are in place for your safety and although they can take some getting used to, must be present for any motor vehicle to meet the necessary NCAP safety ratings and be compliant for use on UK roads.

Many of these systems do not just work via software but also vehicle cameras etc. Sometimes road markings are not always clear, not enough space is left when passing parked cars or required spaces are not being left ahead of you. Also, the camera may well pick up something that is not immediately obvious to you, such as a car pulling out of a junction ahead on the road. If the camera sees the side of the car, there is more opportunity for it to activate the alert systems.

These are just examples, and I am sure you can understand, it is impossible to advise you of this without understanding your local driving conditions or driving style. It is impossible to surmise what may be happening.

If there is a fault with any of these systems, MG Motor UK Ltd. would cover the cost of replacement through warranty, however, first, a fault does need to be diagnosed by your dealership and confirmation that any fault has occurred as the result of manufacturing defect.

I trust that the above will at least answer some of your questions, and I am sorry that we are not in a position to offer clear guidance without the intervention of the technician.. I am truly sorry for any inconvenience that this causes.

Yours sincerely

Gary Smart

If this platitudinous crap is the best that the No.1 Chinese car manufacturer can come up with, one can only imagine how bad the ones lower down the list are. In my experience, the legacy brands like BMW, Audi and Mercedes are not much better

This is my response :-

Dear Mr Smart

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my concerns although the content of your reply is most disturbing

I feel I can only express my deepest sympathy for you (especially with such an unfortunate surname) in having to pretend that there is nothing wrong with the hardware and software that has been installed in a perfectly good car in order to remove control from the driver and in order to obtain an NCAP 5-star safety rating. These features may be “behaving normally” but they have proven to be dangerous on many occasions

May I start by stating that I do understand why you have been forced to adopt these so-called ‘safety features’ which effectively remove control by the driver and transfer overriding control to a set of cameras and a computer. This strategy is now commonplace across most car manufacturers with varying degrees of success or failure. As with life in general, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and these ‘safety systems’ are fundamentally flawed in that they are incapable of gathering enough knowledge to act correctly in all situations. They were designed on smooth tarmac test tracks or roads with a while line down the centre, kerbs on either side or on multi-lane motorways. Therefore, when faced with country lanes with no white lines, no kerbs, potholes, changes in road surface and an assortment of obstacles such as trees, wonky signs, farm vehicles and sheep, they lack the artificial intelligence to interpret the images from the cameras. The MG EV Forum on the Internet is groaning under the weight of complaints from drivers of these cars so there is clearly something seriously wrong with the software which the upgrades are not fixing. The so-called ‘safety’ systems are linked to cameras that cannot read speed limit signs half the time and cannot tell a cyclist from a lamppost or a tree or a pedestrian or anything else, for that matter. As a result, the wretched lane-assist and front collision software starts bleeping warning messages and steers the car into the ditch or slams the brakes on for no apparent reason. This definitely makes the car much more dangerous to drive on most roads

I have lost count of the number of e-mails I have sent to your ‘Customer Services’ department over the last four months or so and I respectfully suggest that you read them all as well as the complaints on the MG EV Forum. One of my neighbours used to work at MIRA and was engaged in the design of these computer-controlled ‘safety systems’ for several different manufacturers. He left when he realised that the whole concept of removing control from the driver and handing it over to a set of flaky cameras, software and touchscreens was totally bonkers

I think it may be pointless spending any more time trying to convince you that the driver MUST have total control over any vehicle (for insurance purposes if nothing else) and the safest way to control the car while moving is via knobs, switches and buttons

The app which bears your name is also totally useless. The other day I tried to check on the charge in the car using the iSmart app. The app told me that “your token has expired” and all attempts to log in again have failed. Nobody is able to tell me what to do

By the way, the MG dealer network is almost universally useless and unable to offer any support
