- MG3 Hybrid+
Greetings. New joiner, new car. Thought I'd kick-off to add a bit of balance and say something positive & constructive about the MG3 Hybrid Trophy.
Firstly many thanks to this forum for a plethora of really useful & largely negative but pertinent information prior to looking closely at non-SUV alternatives prior to taking the plunge & buying my first ever new car. At the age of 64 and formerly a quality control toolmaker at Fords (don't laugh) before becoming a (marine) engineering mechanic for 4 decades, I thought I knew a bit about cars...
Last car? A 2015 Ford Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost. Not flash, but reliable (wet-belts aside) & pretty mundane (happy with that). And adequate. Outwardly, to me, the MG3 not only looks similar-ish but is infinitely cheaper with a giant leap technologically. It took me weeks to actually figure out all the features and functions available. Seriously.
The only criticisms I've found thus far have already been raised, but to my mind, now they've sorted the steering wheel adjustment and 60/40 folding rear seats, the other glitches are largely within the grasp of software updates. For me, that means the permanent 'switch-off' of speed alarms based on 'last seen' speed signs, regenerative braking setting as desired and staying set as such. Oh, and the bloody door locks being manually set rather than automatic.
What do I miss? Heated front windscreen, maybe - but the window demist on the MG3 is about 5 times faster & the iSmart remote heating gizmo knocks that out the park.
This forum has given me (and countless others) a cracking insight into the potential flaws, so many thanks once again. Sometimes I do wonder if some individuals vent their spleen just to justify to themselves their next acquisition.
Just to add a bit of balance, whilst working at at Ford Motor Co (early 1980's) we used to churn out around a thousand cars every 24 hours where I worked. No software fitted, no robots used, no 'leccy windows. Car radio? Extra.
There was always what was termed a 'friday afternoon car' which came off the line with up to 100 identified defects.
At the time, the Japanese car manufacturers were entering the car market & they were viewed with derision. They were faster & far cheaper but they rusted (so did ours, particularly wings & sills), yet they were more economical to run, had radios, tinted glass, air con & wing-mirrors as standard. I still remember laughing when a mate bought a Ford Escort van on a discount 'ticket' and was asked: "Would Sir like the passenger comfort kit?". "What's that?" he asked. "A seat. Thirty pounds extra".
Bottom line is forums are infinitely better than reviews in that, apart from AI generated translations, the problems posted are pretty much genuine, but equally the silent majority aren't likely to create a thread saying everything is pretty much OK for the price.
