Had my MG5 PFL SR from new in June 2021, performed faultlessly and a joy to drive. Until June 19th 2025..... a flurry of faults (Autohold fail, Hill Hold unavailable, System Fault) were displayed and it failed to start. Had to wait a while to have it towed to the local MG dealership in Warrington. Now over 5 weeks later it's still there - the speed sensors were replaced, and now another flurry of faults has been displayed to do with the main drive. At least they gave me a courtesy car after a few weeks. Wondering if I'll ever get my MG5 back. I suppose this is what happens when you mix cars with software, a Devil's brew. Has anyone experienced similar? It will be 6 weeks on Thursday and no nearer to my car being back off the slab!!

It sounds like the 12 volt battery went flat from the symptoms you described. Surely it can't be that ?
No, was all fine - had just been driving earlier that day. I did undo it and reconnected, same result. Also have one of these chargers that I carry round, made no difference.

Sorry to hear of your problems :(
Is the courtesy car something decent?
Since Holdcroft is a Honda dealership as well, they gave me a Honda Jazz - it will do fine for now, can get to work etc, but I'd really like my MG back! The dealership seems to be spending a lot of time trying to work out what's gone wrong - I suspect a lack of knowledge / not enough engineers with knowledge of EVs. Can't see any way to hurry them up - no point getting shirty, but I do wish they'd get a move on.

My ZS EV was off the road for 3 months at the dealers while they tried to find someone qualified to remove the traction battery and diagnose the fault. No courtesy car for all that time either!

In the end an engineer came down from MG UK and removed the battery, diagnosed a faulty module, and parts were ordered. He returned the following week, fitted the modules and all was well.

That's what I was afraid of - waiting endlessly for a fix. I suppose it isn't specifically EVs that have this problem, just any modern cars with software and electronics to go awry....

The only good thing to come out of it is that the Dealer, now that Battery Courses have been made available by MG, have had 4 technicians trained, and they are now an MG battery centre.

Well, I hope that helps! I'll give them a call tomorrow and see where they're up to - they give me the impression of not being on the ball with this technology.....

Who is the dealer - it might be useful to know a dealer that has good battery knowledge.

Caffyns Ashford, Kent.
Interesting - I have had my MG5 PFL SR (71 plate) Exclusive for a year now with no issues. What you experienced is my only worry. I understand things can go wrong but if they can't be sorted in an adequate time it would really annoy me. The MG5 seems to be the most reliable model in the MG range so far. Out of interest would you still buy another MG after your experience?

Probably not. The lack of support from MG UK was disappointing, to say the least. I appreciate that a lot of marques might be the same now, but there was just no empathy at all.

I bought the ZS as it was, by comparison, a lot of car for the money, and I still like it. When I feel the time is right to change it, or if my needs differ, I will look around and see what there is available across all marques in my price range.

I would be hard pressed to decide on a replacement for the MG5 as it has been so good. Reliability is the most important parameter for me - hence the decision to get the MG was a gamble

Similar for me - had my MG5 PFL SR for exactly four years before this issue, the first that's taken it off the road - but it's been 6 weeks now, and no indication that they are any nearer to fixing it. What I'd like to know is, is it specifically MG - or is it any Chinese car - or any modern car built anywhere? If there was some manufacturer that gave top service when things like this go wrong, I'd go with them. Doesn't matter how fab the car is - and I really like my MG5 - but if they can't resolve it when it goes wrong, it's a showstopper for me.
