Hi All,

I am soon to take ownership of a new MGS5, comming from a MK2 ZS Long Range.
I currently have a SigenStor solar setup with 8kWh battery storage on the house.
I was looking at the battery & inverter system and found that the manufacturer also does a module that can be attached to the existing modular system to allow Bi-directional charging but it is in DC.

My question is, does the MGS5 V2L system only work on the V2L with an AC cable or would it still allow discharge with a DC plug as well?

The Module that I could get comes with a 7.5m DC cable (in the shape of a CCS DC Connection that plugs into the CCS DC Connection on the Car), it allows up to 25kW DC charging to the car, but I'm more interested in discharging the car back to the battery pack and powering the house. If the plug is DC but the Car only allows for AC V2L would it still allow discharge through the DC cable but only use the Type2 or AC section of the DC plug?? My gut says No but maybe I'm wrong.

Would anybody have any experience of this?

Many Thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware the S5 will only power AC devices via a "special" adapter, and power devices fitted with a 13 amp plug. It cannot be connected to any system that has AC already at the outlet i.e. you can't connect it to power your home as the AC outlet from the car will not be synchronised with the home AC power system i.e. the grid.

If you are using V2L, that takes up most of the Combined Charging System socket. There will be no room to simultaneously plug in something that does DC charging or discharging.

My apologies if I've misunderstood your question.

I've tried to buy a CCS2 AC and DC plug, they are either insanely priced, or the order is almost immediately refunded because they were scamming and the agency (like Temu) caught them or realised they actually couldn't get one to resell .....

Whether it is possible to scan a CCS 2 DC fast charger plug and have it 3D printed, possible I guess, but you need to get hold of one first to dismantle it .....

Sorry, just to clarify and update, the DC module on the battery storage system would be via a CCS connection on the battery storage system that plugs into the CCS on the Car. I've updated the original post as well to reflect this. Thanks.

There is no DC to DC plugs available for the CCS2 system as far as I know, all the V2L plugs I've seen are the top AC section.
If you find or know of a CCS2 plug with the DC section as well, please let us know on this forum and preferably in this thread .....

Thanks for clarifying your original post.

The Sigenergy EV charging system is completely independent of V2L. V2L is AC only.

My understanding is that discharging an EV battery via the big DC pins of a CCS2 port is somewhat stretching the protocol, so whether the car plays along or stops with an error depends on the model, and in some cases may depend on firmware versions.

But if the relevant standards body has codified how DC discharging is to operate, then I'd say that there is a good chance that the Sigenergy system will work with an MGS5. To be certain, we'd need someone with an MGS5 try to discharge at a home that has a Sigenergy with the DC charge/discharge module included. Or if Sigenergy adds the MGS5 to the list of models known to work with their EV module, assuming that they have such a list.

From the Sigenergy brochure, I see the following in the small print:

"Once the relevant standards are published and tested, V2X feature can be upgraded
and supported via the OTA. For timelines, please refer to future announcement made on the official website."

I might have gotten that quote slightly wrong; my phone didn't highlight cleanly.

But that confirms to me that the standards are not yet complete. Elsewhere, they noted that V2X depends on the EV's capabilities.

Over on this thread MG4 in Australia I think I have uncovered the rather deceptive terminology used by these people.
In that post is a link to a review video, at the 1:48 mark, the plug is clearly an AC CCS2 plug with no DC contacts, that requires a much bigger plug that appears at the moment to be an "unobtainium" product.

The V2X is referring to in this case, bidirectional V2L AC capabilities as well as V2G capabilities if they can get the required specifications organised and then sent OTA ...... but it won't make it a DC charger, and I have no idea how they plan to make it push 25kw into a unit that is designed to max out at 7kw ..... the difference in AC voltage will be another interesting feat of electronic magic .... more likely, 220vac charging the house battery and in turn, that going through the grid tie inverter part to produce the 255vac to actually get the energy out into the grid .....

Well, over on the MG4 in Australia thread, and here, I'm going to have to pull my head in

Well, I'm going to have to take all that rant back ...... Caught by a You Tube video maker making it up as he goes it seems .....
@wattmatters actually has one of these installed and has a graph showing the solar actually DC charging the EV battery and the plug is shown in this You Tube video clearly shows there is only an earth pin and the two signal pins in the upper AC section of the CCS2 plug and the two DC pins in the lower section.

It does appear like the whole unit must be installed close to where the EV will be charged ..... something to think about .....
