Phone scam warning

Many years ago a friend at work got really tired of the conservatory salesman phone calls so he adopted a different strategy. He engaged with the conversation, discussing the finer points especially the more expensive options right up to the point where he wondered if his neighbour would complain about it, to be reassured that their conservatories were so attractive that everyone liked them. He then pointed out his neighbour was below him as he had a 1st floor flat......

I know someone else who did that.

It's ridiculous anyway. If you want a conservatory you aren't just going to go with the outfit that was so desperate for business that they cold-called you.
They were the same people who cold called about double glazing in the 70/80s. We had a 1920s end of terrace in the late 1970s, at the time only one company advertised double glazed sash windows which would have been a nice option. I sent for a brochure, needless to say a few weeks later on a cold November evening there was a knock on the door. " I know you ticked no salesman but....". I didn't invite him in and despite several attempts a getting an answer to 'roughly how much' I couldn't get an answer. At that point my girlfriend stuck here head round the corner and said "Either give us a rough price or fudge off", "good night madam" was his response and we heard no more.

Direct and recent experience of a phone scam, my mother in law who is 90 and just lost her husband had her laptop hacked, black screen you have a virus and need to remove it asap.

She rang her broadband provider (at her age and with limited experience of technology living alone, that’s what she thought she should do) was it in a queue, then asked for a call back ( AI queue) and 20 minutes later ( total coincidence) her mobile phone rang and a guy said he was from some security company and was there to sort out a virus on her computer.

Long story short he effectively groomed her, swore her to secrecy, tell no one about this even your family, got her to download screen sharing, said she need to set up on line banking and transfer thick end of £30k from her account, left her with £544.

She discovered something was wrong when she got a print out transaction from the post office showing her balance, woman was traumatised, her big thing she did not have enough money to send her Easter cheques to grandchildren.

Bank were able to recover the money but those scumbags are out there, they ain’t going away,

Never experienced this sort of thing first hand until now, it was the effect it had on her daughters as well including my other half, having a financial background I was asked to get involved, I made the case to the bank that at. 90, just bereaved she should have been on their watch list, never a user of on line banking and sets up on line banking and starts transfering money out, Red flag IMPO,

Oh for crying out loud, they should never have let that happen. ALL the red flags.

I remember when I decided to engage an investment management firm, a few years before I retired, and yes I got them off the internet, but I contacted them, not the other way round. I had to transfer some money that was in a holding account with my bank to let the new people set up the investments, and I practically got the third degree from the lady in the bank. (We had an actual bank in the village, with actual people in it, back then.) When I said the money was being transferred for investment management purposes that seemed to set off a whole slew of warning bells.

The lady actually apologised for all the questions, but I said I totally understood and it was reassuring to know that they had these safeguarding systems in place. It sounds as if they've completely gone to pot now.

So I’m looking for investors in my bottled emergency Watt company. You just carry a bottle in the glove box. If you ever run out completely just empty it slowly into the cigarette lighter socket, wait 20 minutes…………
I'll take two. 😁
