Hi,

I wanted to share a weird issue I just had with my MG S5's power tailgate and see if anyone else has experienced this exact behavior.

Yesterday, my car was at the service center to get the rear seat covers replaced. Because of the work, the tailgate was left wide open for several hours. When I got the car back, the power tailgate started acting up in very specific stages:

Phase 1 (Right after service): Pressing the key fob or the external tailgate button would lower the door normally, but the lock/latch wouldn't engage at the very end (the soft-close motor didn't pull it in).
Phase 2: Oddly enough, if I closed it using the interior infotainment screen menu, it closed AND latched perfectly! It seemed the screen command could override the glitch.
Phase 3: A few hours later, the fob/button started latching the door physically, BUT the dashboard still showed a red "tailgate open" warning, so the sensor was out of sync.
Phase 4 (This morning): The interior screen menu stopped working as well. It completely refused to latch.

I took it back to the dealer this morning. The mechanic didn't even plug in a diagnostic tool. He simply lifted the tailgate manually to its maximum height, and then manually pushed it all the way down by hand until it physically clicked and latched into the lock.

Since that forceful manual close, everything works flawlessly again!

I later found a note in the manual stating that if the anti-pinch or thermal protection is triggered multiple times, the system suspends the electric function for safety and requires you to "manually close the tailgate completely once" to reset the system. It seems leaving it open for hours (or the mechanics constantly moving it/blocking it while working on the seats) triggered this protective lockout.

Has anyone else run into this specific lockout behavior where the screen works but the fob doesn't? Is this manual reset the standard way you guys recalibrate the tailgate when it acts up?

Thanks!

Possibly one of the guys doing the seat covers pulled the lid down a bit and it lost it's reference. The boot not locking like that is common enough for people who accidentally start to close the boot by hand and then press the close button. The cure as your mechanic did is to open it fully by hand. Not sure if he had to close it by hand as well but if it works now then thumbs up :D

I hope there won’t be any more problems and that it doesn’t start producing this glitch again tomorrow. 🙂
