Not an MG
Hello everyone,

I am intersted in buying an MG ZS hybrid +. I know the car has good mpg in town driving and i like driving hybrids. However i do monthly a long trip in motorway. Some reviewers say i should expect at most 40mpg UK. That's disappointing in comparison to my current diesel. What is your real mpg at 75 miles per hour?

Thank you

To the forum. 🙂👍

I took my ZS Hybrid + alone the M42, A42 to East Midlands Airport in July and I managed to do 55 mpg. The engine ticked over at 2700 rpm at 70mph, when the electric kicked in the revs dropped to 1700 rpm. The car was fully loaded with 4 people and 4 large cases in the boot.

I have managed 62mpg on a long run (motorways). But, on other occasions can be 45 - 50 mpg. It mostly depends how you drive, and weather conditions. If you have heating or air con on, then this takes lots of battery power, which causes the engine to run and burn fuel.

You have to learn what makes the engine switch on, and how to fool the engine, so it switches to electric.

My personal opinion on the ZS+ is that the engine is not as economical as other similar models, but the electric motor is fantastic compared to similar.

IMO the ZS Hybrid can't heat without the ICEW engine, and my experience is that below 10ish degrees Celsius, this does indeed have a noticeable effect on economy; Like my average goes form below 5l/100km (59ish MPG UK) to more like 5.5 (51ish), with especially short trips suffering most, and motorway below 100km/h/60mph where the car would usually drive for prolonged in EV mode, but also cool headwind means (and lack of active grille shutters) means that the engine cools down quickly and will reengage a lot sooner.

And as pointed out, the GM/SAIC 1.5 engine doesn't seem to be exactly the brightest stars in terms of basic economy and refinment, but in most scenaros the more powerfull electric motor and bigger battery really more than make up for it. However, certain shorter routes in Winter are not one of those scenarios.

Can't really comment on 75 mph but I've been monitoring my fuel consumption since I got mine in March and I consistently get mid 40's mpg, I've seen low 50's which was probably a longer motorway run rather than my normal mixed useage. This is based on mileage and fuel purchased at fill up from new so the early figures are when the engine was running in.

I owned a VW Golf PHEV for about four years, before going full EV in about 2019
The engine used in the Golf, was the 1.4 TSI unit combined with a very clever electric drive system and a slick six speed DSG box.
The overhaul fuel economy was excellent.
PHEV’s are not cheap at all to buy and then service.
In order for them to effectively pay a return on the high original outlay for the car, they need a very precise user case, that will allow them to be effective and economical in return.
The MG HS PHEV is really not rated very highly in regards to its returns of MPG from the ICE, when it is running on petrol only.
The EV assistances side of the car, is able to bring up the economy level to an acceptable figure though.
Maximising the use of the electric range at every opportunity is therefore vitally important of course.
MPG is hampered by the additional weight of carrying around the traction battery and vise versa with regards to the dead weight of the ICE when the electric drive only is in use.
Servicing becomes more expensive as the car ages, because you have to care for both the ICE requirements and any items associated to the electric drive.
Some drivers who had PHEV’s never even put them on charge, believe it or not.
They were only bought for the reduced tax off set that they provided.
The PHEV is a brilliant introduction into the world of EV driving for sure, more economical than a straight ICE but not as efficient as a full EV of course.
