A colleague of mine has just got a new ZS hybrid and is complaining that the built in satnav always starts him off from a place other than where he is. Is there a way he can change this?

That sounds like a software problem that some of the EVs had years ago. The workaround was to turn off "dead reckoning". That's the feature where the Sat Nav calculates its position using the car's speed and possibly bearing. Useful when in tunnels or other areas where access to satellites is temporarily blocked.

But a software bug means that it uses this all the time, even when access to satellites is good, so it quickly loses all accuracy. But I think with the EVs, the position would not update at all.

The proper fix (for the affected EVs) was a software update. I would hope that this buggy software never made it to the relatively recent models like the Hybrid+ ones, but never underestimate MG for this type of thing.

It's certainly worth trying turning off dead reckoning. At the very least, it's good information to tell the dealer, and should smooth the way for a warranty software update.

Had my car for 10 months and I have stopped using the Sat Nav. I use Android auto Google maps instead. In for a service in November, and will look for an update.

I did notice that as well in my car the (very) few occasions that I opened the built in Sat Nav (I use CarPlay 99% of he time); It's not entirely exclusive to the MG though, as some SAT Navs I used had this "feature", I think it is down to whether it is always active in the background and thus constantly tracking, or just activates when you open the app and the app is programmed in a way that it searches around the last active/known position and then tales a couple of seconds to recalibrate.

A funny bug is that when I do this, the speed limit indicator will occasionally go crazy for a few seconds, as the car briefly thinks it is on the motorway in some cases when I'm cruising in the city;

That said, it usually finds itself within seconds, and will then work just fine (though live traffic nowhere near on the level of Google Maps, so that's what I am using)
