Say Hello

Hi Everyone

Currently an Ioniq 38kWh (2022) owner, before that had an ID.4 for 6 months.

Looking to change and at the moment a S6 LR Trophy is high on the list so thought I'd have a nose about hear to see what you all think. I've had three other marques dealers be rather disparaging about MGs reliability so will be especially keen to discover how that rumour came to fruition and more importantly is it even valid in 2026.

Hello @brucie, welcome to MGEVs, I really wouldn't say there's any more of a reliability problem with MGs than there is with any other make, unfortunately with MG, it's the MG support and Dealer after-sales service that lets them down.

MG strong points:
  • Build quality
  • Car design
  • Driving experience
  • Mechanical reliability
  • Amazing value / low price

MG weak points:
  • Delivery delays (too popular).
  • Aftersales experience / communication.
  • Long warranty but many shorter-term items in the small print
  • Software bugs and difficulties getting updates (over the air due to launch this year)
  • Dealer network quality highly variable (some great and some poor).

You can buy your car from a dealer outside your area but then you have to be prepared to travel for servicing.

Not necessarily true, sorry.

I bought mine from Stoneacre, Derby, a distance from me of over 50 miles each way. All my servicing (including my ongoing issue of the 12v battery going flat) is being handled by Evans Halshaw in Grantham, a mere 15 miles away. I also have a Service Contract, taken out with MG UK but fulfilled by the Grantham dealer.

Yes, I'm sorry. My post was badly worded.

What I meant to say was that if you find a dealer who IS a good one and buy your car there, then if you want to benefit from the service provided by the good dealer, you would need to go back there for servicing.

Our dealer, Mangoletsi, was very good on the selling side of things, they let us come back 5 times for test drives, 1 in an HS and 4 in an MG4. We had as long as we liked. On the service side, they weren't dreadful, just meh.

The two meh points being they didn't ask how things were with the car when we handed it in for the first two services and they tried charging me for the first service, despite it being included in the lease...

To the forum. 🙂👍

12 mths in and our MG4 poverty pack has been an outstanding vehicle for running costs and reliability. I would stress that it is important to make sure all the updates have been carried out before taking delivery and this forum is a great knowledge source for finding out both how to check they are the latest and what they should actually be ......
The only issue so far has been the charge door not opening, but I investigated on how to remove the cover and access the release by twisting it .... sadly, now that part has left the scene so the charge door open comes on all the time now .... 1st world problems ;)
