Hello,
I've just had a service and I was asked if I had a service plan, which I don't.

I wondered if it would be worthwhile getting one.

I just paid £160 for a service, which doesn't seem to be an option here. The next one is £217 and the one after that £114 for the next one. I remember someone saying that there are two levels of service which interchange.

Does that mean that services done under the plan are cheaper than my dealer charged?

It seems like it might work out about the same but if anyone thinks this is a good deal and won't have any hidden surprises then I will consider it.

Well I think so.

I opted out of the MOT though as I can get that done locally.

It also looks like the dealers can make up pricing as they see fit.

I'm very happy with what I'm being asked to pay.

I have never ever paid so little for my servicing.......ever!

I got a service plan when I bought my car ... £399 for 3 years servicing plus first MOT. (1st service was done last November, and that's when I got SCUK001 applied, the update I've mentioned to you elsewhere. But I've got a decent dealer, and have a good relationship with them as they know that I know what's what about the MG4).

Thanks for sharing that the costs vary from dealership.

To be fair to them the cost of living in Oxford is wild and the dealership is in a fancy area so I imagine they have to pay their staff very well to keep them.

Those are the prices now. Next year and the year after etc. they may be higher, so worth fixing IMO.

Is a service plan with MG and usable at any dealership at the price you paid, or is it with a single dealership only. In which case what would happen if that dealer goes out of business or you don't like their work/ attitude etc.

Yes, there are two types of service plan:
  • Offical MG, accepted at any dealership.
  • Dealer-specific (or Dealer-group-specific), which are only accepted at that dealer.

The dealer ones can be cheaper (not always) but if the dealer goes out of business, the plan lapses and you don't get refunded.

Similar here... worth noting that a dealer service keeps the MG assist feature alive... equivalant of AA recovery for the year... and we know the price of that...

I paid £275 for 3 years servicing when I purchased the car and Nathanial's include MOTs for life when you buy a car from them. :):):)

If you bought the plan with a credit card and the dealer goes out of buisness can you claim back the unused portion from your credit card company?

As this would technically be a breach of contract ... as long as the purchase value was £100+ then you could invoke Section 75 protection (which makes the credit provider jointly liable with the seller for the performance of the contract). That doesn't just mean a refund ... you could try to get the credit provider to arrange an alternative supplier to take over the service contract.

I called up to book in my second year service (up to 30,000 miles) and was told it would be £317! I said that that was a rip off and looked for other options. When i looked at the service plans online it was £217 which i still think is overpriced but I could live with that. I phoned back up and asked why there was the difference in the price and was told the service plan prices aren't live and if i booked one, I would have to pay the extra when i phoned up to book the service date!?! I went ahead and booked a 2-year service plan online anyway and there were no issues when i phoned up to book it in. Terrible customer service but luckily i got the reduced price.

Personally I like the idea of a service plan, locks in the costs so you know what's ahead and no surprises. lets you budget on a monthly basis, the term is entirely up to you.

Bonus feature is it's transferable to a new MG which I had to do as I changed from a 4 X power, already had dome the math and the figure of unused service cost was spot on, a "new" 3 year plan for the new S6 now in place.

I've not gone for it with the service plan despite it seeming to save money.

One worry I have is that the car gets written off or something, then I've paid for a service plan for a car that no longer exists.

Is that how it would work?

Or can you claim some of it back if the car is no more?

I was told earlier that as it's a monthly payment, if I ever wanted/needed to cancel it then I'd just need to let them know. Any extra that I'd paid would be refunded. Although you're signing in to a 3-5 year 'agreement', you're still only paying monthly.

I went for a 3 year plan with the mot added on. I really wanted to just pay for it up front but my local dealer won't allow it. As Giller says above I like the idea of knowing exactly what it's costing me and that it won't change over the years. The MOT itself is bound to go up so there's a bit of saving there.

I had a 3 year plan with Lexus that cost around £40 a month. I did not use the last service and received a refund. To take out a service plan NOW for the same car would cost £57 a month.
You do save, but worth checking the monthly payments against current prices for service.

When I bought mine, the deal came with 2 years free servicing. I have added to this years 3 to 6 on a plan. The overall cost for the 6 years works out to £166 a year. The MOT'S for years 3 to 6 are extra, but at the reduced rate of £35 per MOT
