Hi all,
Getting my new S5 soon and plan to get it serviced at MG every year to get the MG Assist (AA Breakdown) extended. From experience is it financially beneficial to take out a service plan or just pay as you go? Any advice appreciated 👍

A lot depends on the dealership. By traveling 30 miles I saved £50 on the 3rd service and got the Tesla fix installed for free.

Have had the service done at an MG dealership, to get the warranty upheld and breakdown cover as you say.

When I checked the plan was cheaper but I didn't go ahead, yet.

Some people have plans with dealerships that lost the MG franchise and that caused all kinds of trouble.

Having a service plan that does not tie you in to a particular dealership seems like a good option.

I followed that link and tried a quote - it gave me this:

When I got my 3rd service/first MOT I asked the (same) dealer for their service plan pricing ... they quoted £789 for a 4 year service plan, ~£100 less than the above 3 year plan. 🤷‍♂️ The only caveat is that they are payment in full rather than a monthly plan.

I got a quote and it didn't seem worth it, this was proved when my 2nd service cost less than the quote in the plan.

The thing that really annoyed me was that on the breakdown page the elements don't match the total because of the admin fee, this isn't obvious because it isn't mentioned clearly.

Pop your details in here.
It fixes the price and they clean my car and I get a loan EV.

So, if I understand you correctly, when arranging a plan they cover certain items/expenses however, if they then don't replace those items or fulfil those expenses then you're effectively paying more in the long run 🤔 It's beginning to sound like it'd be worth saving the proposed monthly plan amounts so that I've got the money to cover the yearly services etc, that way if the costs are cheaper I retain the extra cash 👍

That's true but the rate that costs are going up it might cost more in the long run.

If you put the money in a savings account you would be £70 up as you wouldn't be paying the admin fee, and earn a bit of interest.

When I had a Kia I had the service plan because it was a lot cheaper than pay as you go, but with the MG the dealer charged me £153 for the second service, the service plan quote was £217.

It's strange how the plan charges you more than the actual service costs. I guess they're making sure they cover all of the potential costs even though the actual service might cost less. Shame they don't reimburse you the cost of its cheaper. I'll call a couple of local MG dealers and get quotes for their services. If they are cheaper than the service plan then I'll pay as I go. Either way, the extended AA breakdown cover (which can cost nearly £140) is a definite bonus for continuing to use MG for servicing 👍

Also check what the dealer's service plan includes. Mine includes either a courtesy car or they will fetch and return it as well as free puncture repairs.
