OK so new MGS5, when I plug it in & look at the iSmart app, it has a button saying "Start charging" So I have set a timed charge to coincide with my cheap rate. The only way it seems to initiate charging even at or beyond the timed start is to press the "Start charging" button. Am I missing something?

The ‘start” charging button is intended to commence instant charging.
We don’t have a smart wall box, so I use the head unit in the car.
In the charging screen, select charging schedule and set your start and end times to suit your off peak tariff and save it.
Leave the car and lock it.
Now take your charging cable and unlock the car, install the lead and lock the car.
If you go quickly to the drivers window and look at the dash panel, it will show picture of the car plugged in and it will say “charging schedule is set up” or something close to that.
After a few minutes the car will fall to sleep.
You're done !.

What do you have set up on your charger?
If I plug the charger cable straight to the car the 3 green lights flash, but charging doesn't start until I hit "Start Charging" in the App.

Thanks I'll try this. My granny charger is only slightly smart. You can set charge current up to 13Amps and also a delayed charge. Just set it to 10 amps. I've only charged it once so far and effectively interacted at the start time.

Slightly off thread, but does anyone else have a different range report on the iSMart app?? Currently, my car says that I have a range of 223 miles....iSmart says I have a range of 234 miles!! Way off!! The good news is that it actually does connect very quickly to my car, unlike the MG4 I used to have.
So there it is - I had an iSmart app that was accurate with the MG4 but took ages to connect. I now have an instant response when connected to the S5, but inaccurate range data!

Try this and see if it makes any difference.
Next time you do this with the App, make a quick mental note of the reported range by the App.
Now before leaving the App completely, just try refreshing the App, has that now changed the details from the first report you memorised ?.
If so, then this figure is very likely to match the info unit in the car displays when you enter the car.
I have seen a similar situation on the ZS EV when running the health check tab on the App.
It runs the check okay, but a couple of the values of the scan are missing.
The internal temperature of the cabin for example.
Refreshing the App and then re-running the health check for the second time, usually then fields get populated.
Worth a go on the S5 I guess 🤷🏻👍.
