So, this morning I opened my tailgate by swinging my foot under the car as usual. Once finshed I swung my foot under the car again to close it. It beeped at me twice and refused to move! Fortunately pushing the button persuaded it to close but since then the "footswing to close" has refused to work. The handbook appears silent on the matter. Before I call the dealer, have I done something stupid?

I was told by dealer that tailgate doesn't close with foot, only with the physical button.
I tested on the demo car, and in fact didn't close with the foot.
Can confirm once mine is delivered.
Were you able to do this before?

I'm pretty sure you can't close it with the foot waggle, only open - it would be convenient if you could as I've tried a few times (when I've had my hands full lifting something out of the boot) and it just does nothing.

Same here. My solution is to walk away and leave it open, put the stuff down in the house then close the tailgate using the key.

You can’t close the boot with the foot wiggle, you can only open it !.
This can be turned on or off in the head unit.
I think is has been set up this way for safety reasons.
Example - You have the boot open and are reaching right into the back of the boot space, trying to retrieve something.
You reposition your feet and trigger the sensor, the boot then closes while you are still reaching right to the back of the boot.
Not a great experience!.
By having to press the manual button in the lid, you should be standing clear of the closing boot lid.
Of course if you did what I stupidly did and opened the boot with the fob, then put the fob into the back pocket of my jeans.
I did this, to avoid putting the fob down inside of the boot.
I then reached right to the back of the boot, to retrieve a shopping bag.
The close button on the fob, then got pressed inadvertently and the boot lid nearly caught me out !.
Just managed to get my head clear, just in time.
Lesson learnt !

Page 115 of the owner's manual tells you how to open the tailgate with a foot swipe but no mention of closing it the same way.

I've done the same thing but the tailgate stops when it touches something in the way. It would have to hit a very delicate part of your anatomy to cause any discomfort 😳
