Test drove and then put my order in

I took a test drive of the IM5 last Saturday.

Extremely comfortable car to be in and a nice comfortable drive.

However I really don’t get the lack of one pedal driving in this vehicle. The IM L6 which is the Chinese version of the IM5 has it, so why is it missing here? I love one pedal driving and this omission alone is putting me off purchasing.

I’ve seen a few YouTube video reviews where it has been stated that MG may “consider it” as a software update in the future. Not sure I want to buy a car on a loose promise like that though as there is no guarantee that it will ever arrive.

The other issue I have is rear visibility which is
nonexistent! Yes you can get the rear camera up on the infotainment screen, but surely the rear camera should have been wired up to a video rear view mirror. I think I would have to buy something like a Woolfbox G900 Pro if I bought the car to ensure I had permanent rear view.

A real shame as this had real promise.
The rear view on the IM5 is definitely smaller than the IM6 but in both I could see enough for normal driving (that is I could see if something was behind me). Not a lover of one pedal driving but would like options of more aggressive regen.

I also love one pedal driving (we had it on the Polestar 2) and miss it on our current cars (ID.3 and Megane e-Tech). However I found that I didn't miss it as much as I expected, so I wouldn't dismiss it for this reason alone.

The rear visibility is extremely poor but just scrolling up the left button on the steering wheel immediately shows a very high resolution image on the main screen, which actually worked pretty well.

I feel that where the market the car is aiming for the rear view mirror should incorporate the camera image, like the Mégane iconics or Polestar 4s.

I have to ask... why? Just because it's where it's always been, doesn't mean it always has to be this way. We're happy to look down at our speed, so why not down at the rear view display?
Also, a big problem for many people is the change in focal distance to look at a rear view camera display integrated into the rear view mirror - it's such a huge change (many metres to just 10s of cm) that it takes a good half second or more for eyes to adjust. Looking down at a display in the main screen is significantly less of a change and is much less tiring on the eyes. It's the main reason I don't use the Megane's rear camera display in the mirror, but simply keep it as a mirror.

Rear view mirror wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me. After all plenty of vans have none and side mirrors only is fine - but then the IM5 isn't without a view given the camera.

Like all of these things I would have to try it and see how I adapt and what I think.

It isn't obvious to me that looking up at a mirror is the naturally right solution, even though it has been standard for many decades. It is just what we're used to.

I have heard quite a few people complain about looking up at a rear view screen without the ability to move their head to adjust the view, some seem to adapt and some find it hard.

Test drove a IM5 LR this morning, overall very impressed.
I thought the suspension was excellent giving a very smooth drive, good traction and nicely weighted and responsive steering.
The level of tech is pretty insane even for me and I love a bit of tech!
Only real downside was the very limited rear view not totally offset by the camera on the dashboard particularly as my view of that was partially blocked by the steering wheel.

I'm going to test out the BYD Seal and Polestar 2 before making a decision but they'll have to be pretty amazing to beat the IM5.

S'pose shouldn't say this, on a MG EV forum. But check out the new Mercedes CLA EV, it looks very impressive. 🙂👍

Both cars smaller than the IM5 always worth remembering the polestar 2 was never a ground up EV, I believe it still has a rear raised central tunnel (like an ice car) so impacts room for the middle passenger although it has continually evolved and now has very efficient motors.

Cracking deals available on the seal saw a pre reg (under 100 miles) for £32k, £13k discount not the same range though
