Looks like it damaged the Leaf parked behind it pretty badly too. So sad.
The lady owner had just loaded her children into the car and started to smell burning.
They all got out of the car and watched it burn to the ground.
Absolute mess !.
I believe VW have the car and carrying out a full investigation.
This situation could badly threaten the VAG range of EV’s.
I understand it has been identified as a problem with a certain make / type of HV battery pack that they are using.
Not every car is affected, it depends on the supplier of the HV pack, by all accounts ?.
HUGE headache 🤕 and a recall for a lot of cars I suspect.
I remember the last recall on HV packs, when they discovered that moisture had entered the case of number of packs in service.
Moisture and contact with lithium batteries cells means big trouble, in the way of a big fire risk.
My previous VW PHEV was recalled for the HV battery inspection, as where almost everybody else’s.
The pack had to be removed from the car and the aluminium casing split, cells checked for damage and rebuilt with new casings.
Any evidence of moisture damage and the pack was rebuilt or even replaced.
The job was completed in a day.
Of the 11 cars checked like mine, only one car required a new / rebuilt pack.
VW had a team of specialists touring the county carrying out the work at central points.
My closest authorised dealer to carry out the work was about 45 miles away.
I left the car there for two days ( due to the distance ) and they gave my a PHEV loan car.
I was contacted directly by telephone by VW customer services themselves.
I feel this latest problem could be on a much bigger scale though.
