Hi all,

I’ve had my IM6 for a couple of weeks now and thought I’d share some of the issues I’ve come across. If anyone has experienced similar things, or found solutions – I’d really appreciate your input.
  • Ventilation/AC – For an EV, it takes far too long to heat up or cool down. The air conditioning feels almost non-existent.
  • Auto-lock/handles – The system feels temperamental. I don’t understand why the car doesn’t automatically present the door handles when you approach. Having to press and hold your thumb isn’t very intuitive, and sometimes it doesn’t register.
  • High beams – Surprising that a car with so much tech doesn’t have auto high beams.
  • Random alerts – Even with ADAS features switched off, the car occasionally chimes/dings at me for no obvious reason.
  • Regen braking – Not as strong as I’d like.
  • Charging cable release – No local unlock option; you can only release via the app (which is slow) or from the infotainment screen.
  • Apple CarPlay – Very laggy. Sometimes the display shows one track still playing while the audio has already moved on to the next. The controls can be unresponsive too.
  • Battery display – Can’t find any way to show charge as a percentage – it only shows range in miles.
I’ll update this thread if I spot more, but I’d be interested to hear whether other MG EV owners have come across these same issues. Are these things that might realistically be improved with software updates?

  • High beams – Surprising that a car with so much tech doesn’t have auto high beams. It does.
The MG iM6 features an auto high beam function, part of the
MG Pilot suite, which automatically switches high beams to low beams when it detects other vehicles, providing enhanced safety without manual interaction. To use this feature, ensure the high beam is set to the "AUTO" position. If you encounter issues with the auto high beam, check for any available software updates, as these can often resolve performance problems, or disable it in the vehicle's settings.
  • Battery display – Can’t find any way to show charge as a percentage – it only shows range in miles. Yes, I agree that is annoying.

Some of those are ones that you think could be fixed by a software update, although the air conditioning concerns me a bit, maybe it is faulty. High beams is really strange and not knowing the battery percentage is really annoying.

I think you have an emergency pull switch in the boot. It is hidden behind a panel I believe

Hi Mike,

Thanks for that. May I ask where you got this from please? It seems far more informative than the manual i've studied. I've tried in multiple scenarios, but the High Beams just wont activate.

Yeah, there are some questionable choices made for this car. Fingers crossed an update is soon pushed that fixes these.

Sorry, I should've clarified. I meant at the ease of convenience, not in case of an emergency.

Google. Also refers to auto high beam in the manual.

The manual also states you can unlock it with the car shaped key thingy (my words)

Regarding the AC.
I drive the first gen of Tesla Model 3 without a heatpump.
Wife drives the BYD atto3 that has a heatpump.
I am noticing significant difference between the 2 when the temperature inside the car is close to the ambient temperature.
The BYD having a heatpump takes time to decide if cold or warm air is needed to maintain the temp inside the car. It almost feels that it gets confused by the proximity of the outside and inside temperature.
I would guess that it is a heatpump 'feature' this. Curious to see how it will perform when it gets distinctively colder.

As for the charging cable release; both my Tesla and wife's BYD are the same with the IM6.
Recently Tesla introduced an update where you keep the back passengers door handle open for a couple of seconds and it unlocks the cable. Silly though since you will have to shut the door afterwards.
As for the BYD if you unlock the car with the keys it will unlock the cable. Doesn't the IM not do the same?

My IM6 is about two months old now.
My AC works just fine, and that’s important here in Thailand
The lock/unlock process is really annoying .
My charge cable releases with the NFC card touching the charger, or a car ‘lock/unlock’ cycle
CarPlay works great! No lags or control delays
The MG app has the percentage IMG_0884.webp

Yes it does. The cable is unlocked when the car is unlocked. It relocks again after a short time if you do not remove the cable.
From memory, the MG4 used to release the cable when I opened the passenger door even though the car was unlocked. it is an annoying "feature" when some makes fit a very handy button in the charging dock that releases the cable irrespective of anything else.

Thanks for your reply. How does your car perform when heating up?

I can also confirm that the charging cable does release when pressing the unlock button - can’t believe I hadn’t tried that before.

Unfortunately, the auto high beams don’t work, and the manual doesn’t list them as a feature either, which is really disappointing.

I’ve also noticed a few more issues:
  • Audio pops - when the volume is around two-thirds or higher, I hear some audible pops, almost like the sound is clipping. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed in a future update.
  • Phone charging ventilation - I was told that the wireless charger has a ventilation system to help keep the phone cool, but on mine nothing seems to activate.
  • Autopilot behaviour - the system feels quite inconsistent. Auto lane changes are temperamental, and it slows down excessively when approaching corners in pilot mode. There’s also no clear indication of whether autopilot will engage: sometimes the steering wheel icon shows but won’t activate, and other times it engages without the icon being displayed.
Thanks again

Hi Chukensky. I’m not sure what you mean by heating up. Our current night time low temps are around 22°C, and I have no idea how much, if any, heating is required by the battery.
I continue to be impressed by the Pilot mode. when pilot mode is active the car icon is traveling on a blue road. It does indeed slow for some curves a bit excessively, but it handles others at 100k/h just fine. I think it may be associated with how far the cameras can see around the curve, just a thought.
So far I have found one situation where it won’t advance from ACC to Pilot. i often drive a four lane rural road with a concrete divider down the center. If Pilot is active before I get to the divided section, all is well and Pilot does LKA perfectly.
However, if I am already driving through the divided section on just ACC, multiple deflections of the shift wand refuse to advance to Pilot mode. This is when driving in the lane adjacent to the wall. I need to test the results while in the outside lane.
The phone cooler may be controlled by the vent knob in the center console. Just a guess, I have my knob turned ‘off’ and I have never checked the phone cradle vents for any air flow. I’ll add those to the todo list.
Lane change works okay for me, very crisp movement I think enhanced by the rear wheel steering, and great camera coverage. Auto-parking is also very crisp with occasional clearances below 10cm. Impressive.

The cars I test drove heated up as quick as my Ioniq 5 with a heat pump.

Re headlights, the manual does refer to - Automatic High Beam Indicator - Intelligent high beam is turned on. And it shows the auto option in the manual:

With this selected, it only operates the dipped beams. The only reference the manual makes with regards to intelligent high beam, or auto high beam is its corresponding icon, but there’s no way to engage it.
