MG4 Restricted speed - weird

This is concerning.. but how many people are having this issue? seems it would be very noticeable..

On this forum maybe up to 4 or 5 that have commented, including 1 I think may have rejected their car over it and therefore aren’t here any more.
The video posted from a YouTube reviewer is interesting and telling though.
Shows it’s potentially a worldwide issue.
TBH I think there’s loads of cars have this issue but the owners just haven’t come across it yet.
Putting their foot down is alien to them, either due to circumstance or just because they don’t like to ( totally alien to me! )
I’m lucky that I live somewhere where I can use 100% of the performance of any car I’ve owned most days at some point and I like it.
First car in scores I’ve owned that has simply failed to do as it’s asked.

Because of free speech I can have my opinion based on reports on this forum of this issue and comment accordingly don't you think...I did not say they did not know just that their interest may not be piqued..and only a handful of reports seems correct don't you think?

Have an ignore on me in 3, 2, 1….

Having looked over the specifications of the motors the ratings are:

SR 54kW constant / 125kW peak
LR 68kW constant / 150kW peak

If we assume that what is happening is the motor has hit its peak output threshold and is dropping back to its constant rating this equates to:

SR: 43.2% power output
LR: 45.3% power output

Which isn't a million miles away from @bowfer reports of 38% so the question is... Is this a sensor fault causing the motor to believe it's overworking or not?
It isn't a power restriction, it is a speed limit. That's the weird thing, a power restriction would make sense if the motor was saturated but you'd still be able to slowly accelerate.

You wouldn't if the motors sensors and control unit determined it has been at peak too long and throttled it back to its constant rating which would keep the % power read out constant.

Over 5 months in and it's beginning to look more and more like this car has been rushed to the market and should have been tested a lot more

I disagree, we rarely hear of a new issue, the problem has been getting existing issues fully addressed, where MG hasn't been doing itself any favours.

Given the dramatic expansion in ownership of the last few months (thousands of new owners), I have been surprised there haven't been more new problems being reported, this has increased my confidence in the car.

Of course serious problems are always terrible for those affected but there have been few of those and they aren't the typical ownership experience, even if they do generate most of the conversation.

I am looking forward to becoming an owner this weekend so I can contribute firsthand.

It is a low-cost budget EV, at least in SR form. Yes, I know £26k isn't low but it is for an EV of this type, taking off the EV cost penalty it is a cheaply made car.
What I mean by this is that if this is intentional behaviour because they under-specced the motor/drive unit and it can't output high power for very long, that's is a reasonable tradeoff for a budget entry level vehicle. This isn't sold as a performance car.

Now I don't think that's what has happened, still sounds like a bug/fault of some sort to me but we'll see.

Tsedge I think it's safe to say you weren't going to agree with me.
You are definitely the defender of the faith👍

With proper testing the oil leak could have been found and rectified, but now we are 5 months into it and folk are trying there own fixes as they don't have confidence in MG

Proper testing may have identified the bug/issue with the powering down, instead traction motors have been replaced that haven't fixed it

Proper testing may have got all the important safety systems software on the same page, at the moment everyone's is a bit all over the place.

The support network is very obviously not in place with regards parts, software updates etc.

You only need to look at Auto Trader to see how many are back up for sale with very low mileages.
Most folk don't come to a forum to vent, they just hand the car back to the dealer and move on.

It really is isn't it, it's like I'm reading everyone else's experiences and forming an opinion.

Silly me I forgot I don't get one of them. Obviously nobody else on here has an opinion on any subject they aren't experienced in but have read loads about

Ah interesting and there was me thinking the exact opposite, that most people join a forum like this when they have a problem. Good to be put right.

You can express your opinion as much as you like, it is a free country. And indeed you clearly haven't been holding back. And it is the same for me.

I haven't said anywhere that you don't get an opinion. And when you label me "defender of the faith", I do get to reply.

Edit: I tell you what, if you turn out to be right and I have a terrible ownership experience, I will not only publicly acknowledge I was wrong on this forum, I will be photographed with you at the Renault dealership receiving my replacement. Now, what could be fairer than that? 😁

I've never mentioned anyone else's ability to comment.
You however caveated your comments with don't own an MG4 and don't have one on order

I've been unable to test mine under full power for extended amount of time, there's simply been too much traffic or poor conditions for me to really rule out the restricted power issue. So far I've not experienced the 'pulling back' feeling when overtaking (WOT) or on long uphill drives. A track day or dyno session would be good to get somewhat repeatable result.

Even some Audi Etrons or whatever they are called are rating their car at 'peak' power, EG 650HP for a bit, then is ramps back to 500HP or so, so this isn't an MG4 exclusive issue. Audi do list this in the specs, but you do need to dig a bit to find this info.
