MG4 Software Update Thread

LKA only enables when the speed is about 37 mph or higher.
That seems odd as TJA wrestles you for control of the wheel all the way from 0. Every time I'm gullible enough to give it one last try I'm reminded of the dramatic music and the classic Kirk Vs Spock battle ( probably makes no sense to most but a Trekkie will know what I mean 🖖)

Well, most traffic jams are moving slower than 10 mph, so it wouldn't be a lot of use if it didn't work below 35 mph!

I find TJA is OK in a real traffic jam, but as soon as the traffic starts to move faster than 10 mph it drives me nuts and I turn it off.

Can't argue with your logic but TJA is essentially LKA but with speed control so why not let it assist steering from 0 also

TJA (supposedly) tries to keep you central to the current lane ... LKA just tries to keep you in the current lane. So they function very differently.

I'll have to defer & wait for my newborn to let me get more than 2 hours sleep before I can properly digest & understand what you've described there as at a glance both systems are doing the same job but described in a different way. Wouldn't LKA be trying to keep you in the current lane by keeping you central and TJA be keeping you central and therefore maintaining your current lane!

No ... LKA can (if you let it) bounce you between the lane markers, whereas TJA will try and keep you central between the lane markers. :)

I thought it could be useful to have a thread for software update news. I am collecting my car tomorrow and have a feeling that I will be back several times for software updates. Perhaps we can use this thread to keep each other informed when updates appear (I wouldn't rely on my dealer to be on the ball with this)
I picked mine up in December. Asked about software update last month. Perrys Preston promised to find out & get back to me. Nobody did 😵‍💫

So chances are that LKA is not even active.

Well it definitely was active at the same sort of speeds on the very same lanes before the software update. When I first bought the car and before I learned to switch off the LKA, in the first week on four occasions it very violently tried to steer into the bank, plus numerous other twitches and alarms.

Following those experiences, I religiously switched off the LKA as part of the start up procedure, however on occasions it switched itself back on during a journey and would misbehave. It was the one thing about the car that seriously made me consider returning the car to the dealer.

Since the software update, not once has the car displayed any twitches or alarms during my normal driving, except on one occasion where I decided to cross the central white line without using the indicator (on a clear and straight stretch of road), just to see if it would react and try to steer me back into my lane (it did).

This is the funny thing: some received updates and report no more violent tries. I have a december car with the latest software and it still does it....

Maybe that's why I've always felt TJA was more dangerous than LKA if it's constantly adjusting to keep in the middle rather than allowing the car to drift in the lane before trying to correct it 💡

MG's update strategy sucks. It basically relies on the dealers to do the updates either before delivery or during service.
Most dealers don't seem to want to because they can cause as many issues as they fix.

There's no guarantee you actually got all the latest updates to every module in the car.

I’m glad in the software update they made TJA easily switchable on/off
I’ve found it works very well on some roads, and terrible on others.
I’ve now settled on ACC with heavy steering which to me makes more sense when driving on faster roads with flowing traffic, and only enable TJA if the speeds are lower (like through roadworks at 50 or 40mph) or when in heavy traffic jams as the name implies, and there’s a fair bit of traffic around me, when it seems to follow the car in front better rather than trying to look for lane markings.
But I don’t use it for very long any more. Especially on motorways like the m25 where they have these awful phantom lane markings where the old lanes were before they painted the new lane markings and just patched the old ones, badly!
When driving through France’s A roads and motorways, TJA was awesome in keeping within the lane and steady as fcuk. Even through some high speed roadwork sections with cones as lane markers it was impeccable.
Quality of signs in this country I’m afraid has gone downhill and it should be the test bed for new AI training. 🤣 If they can read what the heck the speed limit is around where I live without getting confused they are doing well!

An electronic vehicle that doesn't recieve updates after one year would be laughable at best. You can still get updates for nine year old Teslas. What's the point in activating updates over the air later if they would stop releasing updates?
Slightly off topic, but I have a 13 year old Nissan Leaf and that has had precisely zero updates since new!
