Regeneration brake lights

Maybe it is. I don’t know when/if it was introduced. Good idea.

I have seen numerous posts about 'brake lights under regeneration modes' there appears to have been mixed answers to the question. I always drive in mode 3 for maximum regeneration and last night room advantage of a quiet dark road to test whether the brake lights self activate. I have a 2021 ZS exclusive and I can confirm that when I took my foot off of the accelerator pedal in mode 3 at varying speeds the brake lights activated automatically thus warning following drivers that the vehicle is slowing. If this topic has already been out to bed I am sorry for raising it again if it hasn't I hope this helps.

No, that's a good definitive test, Popsie and much appreciated (by me, at least :) ).
So we can now say with certainty that a 2021 ZS DOES have brake light activation under KERS3 whereas an equivalent 2021 MG5 DOES NOT. This seems a very strange state of affairs if you ask me. What were they thinking (answers on a postcard........etc). Personally I think it is a cock-up rather than an intentional situation but I doubt MG would ever confess to that.

That is the same test that I ran. In KERS 3, in a ZSEV Exclusive, the brake lights come on when you lift off the accelerator.

Thanks for the update. Was there a correlation between the amount of deceleration and the brake lights coming on? I know it’s hard to tell, but does it need to be quite a reasonable deceleration or only very light when under regen3? Do the brake lights come on under regen when lifting off but not completely taking foot off accelerator?

Yes, clearly we'd like to know if KERS3 retardation in the SUV is the same as it is in the MG5. I think only an accelerometer would answer that TBH. I sometimes find that regen effort seems to vary for no obvious reason. Sometimes it seems unbelievably strong, other times, not so. Maybe we should simply ask the question of MG and see what their response is?

Hi poppies and welcome to the forum I do belive what you have written because you are driving a ZS and it applys the mechanical brakes in some settings this all started off a few months back the question that was asked was do the brake lights work on the MG5 under regen and after I did a test I found no they didn’t on the 5 because it as not got the systems on it that the ZS has like MG pilot and Autonomous braking but now the updated one which has just been Announced as the same kit as the ZS so that one should work I think so anyhow ZS yes MG5 mk1 no I have a MG5 and under no Circumstance or in any setting do my lights come on when I take my foot off the accelerator in less I touch the brake pedel read #3 in this thread or #44 in the other thread same title

Quite funny really, on here we are concerned that the brake lights don't come on, over at speakEV they're worried that they do.... 😀
Brake lights whilst using regen
This just goes to show that you can't please all the people all of the time. In fact it seems increasingly difficult to please some of the people all of the time or even all of the people some of the time. I generally aim to never please anyone ever, which means that it's a real bonus when someone actually does seem pleased.

An update on my brake light testing scenario during braking regeneration. I tried it in all mode settings and can confirm the brake lights come on in all modes, also they are only activated at 15mph or above. I would think below 15mph you are very likely going to be using the brakes anyway.

Hi,
Can I just say that this is the MG5 bit of the site and Les has proved we don’t have brake light on Kers.
Maybe worth posting your results on the ZS forum😃

Sorry my mistake.
I'm glad you did, Popsie, otherwise I wouldn't have seen it!
It seems weird that the SUV brake lights trigger under practically all regeneration/deceleration scenarios, whereas the MG5 doesn't trigger under any! I am at a total loss to explain why that would be, other than an oversight on the designers part.

It's so the MG5 doesn't waste valuable watts triggering the lights. After all, every electron counts!

It would be interesting to see how the Kers slows the two cars from the same speed whether the ZS has more braking that's why the brake lights have to come on.
Anyone got one of each for a test?🙂

Adele hi read #49 above for an answer to your question it’s not a design fault the mg5 1st generation is not fitted with the same safety kits that the ZS has but the long range one has it fitted so I would think maybe that will work as the ZS does

One member has both, I think, but I can't remember who off the top of my head.

Well, Les, I'd say it was a design fault if it does not meet the legal requirement, regardless of what the ZS and later MG5 demonstrate. It seems to me that the key question is....Is there a legal requirement for UK cars to have brake lights that are activated over a certain level of regenerative braking and does the existing MG5 conform to it? Either way, let's hope the newer "5" has got it.
