Charging Help!

I find it interesting that someone is willing to spend almost £30k on an electric car and deliberates on spending £500 to £700 on a dedicated charger for said car. Yet is happy to shell out for a new 32A socket outside of the £350 grant support. The grant will go in March and most likely not be replaced. If after all this it is decided then that a 7kw charger is needed it will have cost more than doing it now.

Those free chargers won't be free forever and they will become harder to get onto when everybody else is trying. Personally I'd bite the bullet and get a subsidised 7kw charger and avoid the hassle of trips to the supermarket or slow charge on granny charger.
The cynic in me thinks that when the £350 grant does go, the price of the boxes will fall by about.....£350.
Now what happened when the subsidy to buy (PICG) dropped by £500......

So what happened and what is your prediction for the socket grant? This is a genuine question as I am new to this ev world.

I was cynical about the £350 grant and looked at ways of getting the same for cheaper outside of the grant. I spoke to a local electrician who reckons he can install for cheaper than these whole package deals but it's the price of the box.

I got a quote today from Smart Home Charge for an Ohme Home Pro...

Box £538
Basic install £300
Parts £0
Delivery £10
Total £1017.60 Inc VAT
Less £350 (Inc vat) grant
Grand total £667.60

I have the same train of thought really. I know the grant ends in March and I really do not believe government will not extend it (too busy having orgies at No.10 probably). So to me it's a no brainer to get a dedicated charger fitted to my home. My MG5 is due in in Feb so have some time to do that really.

Also the way I see it is if we ever do leave our home then I see having an EV charger as something that helps sell the house, especially as EV become more common. Like the poster , I have chargers in our office but there are 2 of them, both untethered Rolec chargers. Once we get back in the office I can see a bun fight starting to get past all the company Teslas to get a go on them. So would rather avoid that.

Only thing with me is that I'm with Ovo on a "standard" tariff paying 23p/Kwh. So for at least a year I won't really be able to benefit from cheap overnight electricity. Ovo Drive has a 5p/Kwh off peak rate BUT 27p/kwh all other times because of the jump in energy process.

Still cheaper than filling 60l of diesel.

I'm on Bulb

I'm on Bulb and am hoping that they will be taken over by Octopus.

When the price for eligibility for the PICG (worth £2500 now) was reduced from £50,000 to £35,000, quite a few car prices that were 35-40,000 magically reduced to get under the limit.
Also some under the limit were reduced by £500 quid to make up for the drop in PICG from 3.000 to 2,500.

As for a wallbox, EVSE, it is just a box with a switch in it, and a few electronics for the smart bit. Other than profit there is no need for it to cost the best part of a thousand quid.

A 7.5kW unit will be 3 times as fast as a 'granny' and will make more use of an overnight tariff like Octopus Go if you can get on it.
I wish I had free rapid near me.
Looks like you are better off using the rapids and a granny charge once a month to balance the battery as they don't like 100%raipd charging.
Continuous use of Rapid Chargers is not best for the battery. The fast (7kw) and slow granny chargers are better for long term use. And you do need to balance the battery, at least every 4 weeks.

Personally, I have bought the 7KW home-charger, it's not a lot of extra money considering the good price of the car, and its very very convenient....

I think you're correct on these boxes being overpriced but at the moment there isn't much choice.

Morning all,

I tried to charge my HS PHEV with the Granny charger, it seems it's not working (it could be me). When I attrach everything and plug in at the socket at home, all the lights are blinking. Checked this as per destructions on the back. It states it's checking......

Am I doing something wrong, or is it the electrics at home aren't up to it?

You'll have a better chance of a reply if you ask this question in a new dedicated thread in HS PHEV.

How long did you leave it? My car takes up to a minute of checking on AC before it starts to charge.
