Hi, It does attach directly, but the Velcro also comes with both sides of the Velcro that has sticky tape on it as well (if that makes sense) and I've used that as it was even more secure. So if you wanted to secure the Velcro to plastic or glass you can as well.

So, I don't think "Data Transmission" equals Android Auto\Apple Car play for both. Only the USB A is capable for ACP or AA. The USB C is capable of data but just as an alternative source (USB Hard Drive)? I would need to test this but sure that's how it works.
