    Mirror auto fold

The weather here has been very wet and below 0 for the past few days. Today I went to use my car and the passenger side mirror didn’t unfold. As I locked and unlocked the car a couple of times, I could hear the motor in the mirror straining against the ice. I managed to get it moving with a...

Long motorway round trip in MG S5EV – Update after completing the trip

Yes I’ve had experience of Karcher before and they’re definitely not made to last. This one is a Nilfisk which is meant to be built a bit better. The pump is aluminium rather than plastic but it does look like it has succumbed to the cold. I’m not sure what these “bits” on the pump assembly...

Funilly enough my infotainment system also shows the car as being Soul Blue (swipe left from Home Screen and select ‘User’.

Long motorway round trip in MG S5EV – Update after completing the trip

Believe it or not, I got my trusty power washer out yesterday and it decided to break on me, with water pouring out of the bottom. I’ve taken it apart today and the pump is visibly broken. I reckon I can DIY repair it so I’ve ordered a new pump assembly. It means the car will need to wait a...

Long motorway round trip in MG S5EV – Update after completing the trip

I’m not long back from a trip to Cumbria, one which I have done several times before. On the outbound trip a few days ago, it took 81% of the battery to reach Carlisle (I’ve done it with 65% in the summer). This morning I charged to 90% at Carlisle (couldn’t be bothered waiting any longer) and...

The Ultimate MGS5 "Real World" Energy Consumption Thread

Unfortunately i accidentally reset the counter at some point in the month so can’t make a submission for December. 764 miles covered and I estimate the figure to be around 2.7m/kWh due to lots of short journeys where I was only seeing 2m/kWh. The longer journeys seem to be more efficient at...

My tip would be pick your charging stops carefully. There are certain charging networks that are reliable, and others that don’t have such a good reputation. For me I always look for the big players - Ionity, MFG, Osprey, Fastned, Arnold Clark, Instavolt (expensive), Gridserve and Tesla. These...

Feeling stupid about my first public charge…

I can’t speak for all of them, but in general I have found AC chargers to be a real faff. Generally there is no contactless or RFID reader so you can’t just swipe your credit card or Electroverse, etc Take evcharge.online (as used in parts of Northumberland). They don’t even have an app - you...

Feeling stupid about my first public charge…

Lots of those 7kW chargers are a bit of a faff and use a proprietary app. Sometimes you have to preload money onto the app and then use up the balance. And also you will have to provide your own cable. I tend to avoid them and just find a rapid charger nearby, which are a lot less hassle to use.

Can you set the boot to unlock with the rest of the car? - S5 Excite

There is also a third option if you have the motorised tailgate - swipe down on the infotainment screen to bring up the shortcuts, then press “tailgate”.

Public charging routine in a nutshell

No need to turn car off. Assuming a CCS rapid - remove rubber port cover, plug in charger, pay for it, wait for it to handshake with the car and start charging (around 30 seconds). Either get back into car, or lock car and go do something else. Whether the car is powered on or off shouldn’t...

Long motorway round trip in MG S5EV – Update after completing the trip

This one is the key for me. The charge rate really slows down after 80% and it is usually quicker to move on to the next charger instead of charging until full. For example, I returned from the Newcastle area to Dundee last weekend. I charged at Ionity Metrocentre from around 10% to 80% which...

    No 4G signal

I admit that I have done this on a couple of occasions to pass the time whilst rapid charging. But I’ve always used the hotspot on my phone so I don’t waste the car’s data. You are correct that the Satnav will use internet data for things like traffic congestion (when the road shows amber or...

    No 4G signal

Have you been playing about with watching videos on the car screen, and inadvertently went over the data allowance? It is reported to be 1GB per month. I’m not sure what happens when you reach it, whether they cut you off completely or throttle it to 2G.
