Hi,
I have just bought a second hand 22 plate MG5 LR ( or so I think!). On delivery the GOM is saying I have 103 miles left on 47% charge, equating to about 210 on a full tank. This is after resetting the trip counter and with no heating/lights on etc. I read on the forums a LR should show about 250 miles if battery SoH is 100%. Is the GOM reading affected by ambient temperature? Grateful for any thoughts on this. Want to make sure I haven’t got a lemon as have 2 week cooling off period to return car if needs be!
I have an old OBD reader I used in my Zoe but was hoping to avoid doing all that 😅

Have you carried out a battery balance?
Let it charge to 100% on an AC EVSE charge point and leave it for a few hours it will draw a 200-300w while it does the cell balance.
Reset all counters etc, turn everything off and put into ECO.

In addition to what @Jomarkh has written:

I have the same model as you, though owned from new. I've just completed an overnight charge using my EVSE and the range now shows as 234 miles, and that's with AC, heating almost permanently "on", though heating temperature is kept to 20 degrees max..

During the recent very cold weather I saw this drop to only just above 200 so yes, ambient temperature is very much a factor. (In summer I regularly see 240 - 250.) Range is also very much affected by the manner in which one drives (a "heavy right foot" is not advisable!) and also whether one is making a lot of fairly short journeys. I find my miles per kwh, and hence overall range, is considerably higher when making longer journeys.

So, do as suggested and carry out the full charge and allow the BMS to balance the battery.

The figures you are are seeing are completely normal and as expected at this time of the year. You seem to be getting around 3.8 miles/kWh at the moment.

I agree with this apart from putting it into ECO, just leave in Normal to see WLTP figures or slightly less to reflect any degradation.

Thanks very much all for replying.I will try doing a balance charge and see how it goes. I know from previous EVs how real life conditions affect range, just wasn’t sure whether the actual GOM reading when you do a reset factors in battery temperature or purely theoretical range based on state of health.
Have downloaded Carscanner and ordered new OBD scanner to try and make sure!

I am new to this EV thing but I have recently been using ABRP (even though I don’t drive far) with an OBD2 USB dongle. This gives SOH of the battery as one of its returned parameters so it can more accurately work out your range.

Glad your enjoying your MG5 I think they are great cars.(very under rated)
Key things to note is remember the weather makes a huge difference on your consumption.
A standard route I drive ranges from 2.8 M/KWh to 5.6M/KWh. depending on temperature
In addition I have noted that carried load makes a difference. If I have 2 addults in the back it reduces consumption by about 0.5 KW/h.
As a final point in coldweather it is always worth using heated seats (if fitted) to keep warm rather than cranking up the heater.

247 miles on the GOM this morning. Very pleased!
Also managed to get 3.7 miles/kWh on a 60 mile trip on A roads this morning, albeit driving like a saint 😅 Very relaxing car to drive.
Excellent.
Just remember that only shows WLTP less any degradation, so you're at 99% SOH, very good. However don't expect to get anywhere near that in the real world today. The GOM will adapt and predict based on your actual usage and will only be valid for the same type of usage. For example if you pootle around town with lots of regen etc it will predict future mileage based on that, but if you decide to have a spin down the motorway, forget those figures as they won't be relevant for that journey.
You soon get to learn your car and it's range in different conditions and temperatures and it becomes second nature, just like knowing how far your ICE car would go.

The seasonal GOM variation is huge. The highest figure I've seen is 280 miles in high summer last year. But last month, here in the far North of Scotland, with more than one day when the maximum temperature recorded by the car was -3°C and the lowest was -12°C, the GOM said just 178 miles.
