My wife and I remain very pleased with our MG4 EV. However, we do have a noise problem when the air conditioning unit is switched on. We reported the problem less than four hours after driving away from the MG dealer and they were as helpful as they could be and replaced the air conditioning unit to no avail. The fault continued and seems to be fan related in my opinion (Depending on the speed the air con is working at). We decided not to have it looked at any further at this time. When we returned to our MG dealer for further repairs, we were provided with an identical car that when inspected, had an identical fault. We then asked to look at other MG4 EV’s on the forecourt, only to find the same fault with all five we looked at. Knowing all the others made the same noise when the air con is switched on, we did not want our car to be dismantled any further. We are now going to chase this up on our first EV service in the hope that other people have reported the fault and had it fixed. We are hopeful that MG4 EV’s will have a factory recall at some stage to rectify the fault. It does seem fan (hitting something ) related in my opinion.

For those that are interested and to aid further, I created a video clip of the noise, that has apparently been sent to MG (China). It probably sounds louder than it is, as a mobile phone picks up the sounds very well. Here is the You Tube link.

Summary- If you have this noise and manage to get it fixed, please let us know, so that we can educate our MG dealer to order the correct spares for repairs. Unfortunately, during our last visit, they lost their MG4 EV mechanic, so this was another reason we did not want it looked at any further, at this stage.

Thanks for reading and am pleased to be on board the forum.

Here’s the reply from our MG service manager following my comments about the noisy compressor:

Yes this are like this. We have had a few enquiries with the heatwave.

Its working harder anyway with the heat we have had, and it doesn't have a
conventional engine to drown out the noise.

Its 100% normal and safe

100% normal it is not ! and safety was never in question. It's possibly a fault, which should be fixed as per warranty... if the noise level is akin to mine, your compressor may be without oil as mine was found to be. If your noise level is high, I would use my experience which has been posted as evidence of a fault which required a new pump to be installed and re-gassed. They should re-gas at a minimum to be sure yours contains the oil required for standard operation.

Again the disparity across dealers is shocking, it's a known fault and if the checked and got it early enough they could save themselves from having to replace parts.
At this rate there are going to be numerous AC systems suffering catastrophic (in terms of that system!) Failure. There is quite obviously a good few out there with this issue, if the forum is a guide of a cross section of cars.

Poor attitude from MG

My dealer said the ticking noise was normal and is the same in ice cars but unheard under the engine noise. Others here disagree.
Depends how noisy it is.
It's normal to hear a noise from the AC and it gets louder as the AC works harder.
What you need to do is check it alongside another MG4 with the same AC settings and see if yours is louder or the same.

My MG4 aircon has always made the whine changing pitch startup sound, but no regular clicking. Not audible inside the cabin either. To be honest I just assumed that they were all like this.

Mine started this loud vibration noise (like the video) yesterday when I turned the air on down to 19°. It's definitely an unacceptable vibration /Grating noise. Definitely not a normal whirring sound. It continued when I got out of the car but stopped as soon as I connected the charger cable. It also stops when switching the heater off
I will contact the dealer and see what is suggested
