Interesting thread. By coincidence I took Mrs S to the Arnold Clark Innovations centre in Glasgow today. The best way to describe it is a multi franchise car dealers without sales exec's. The have just about every EV currently available on site for you to look at, ask questions and take for a test drive. No pressure but if you are interested they will direct you to your local AC branch and it's all free. For Mrs S it was great to actually see an EV motor and an EV Battery out of the car which has helped her visualise what happens 'below the floor'. They also have a VW XL1 in the showroom (for those of a certain age it looks like a half scale Citroen SM) which I'd love it it wasn't a diesel hybrid. If you have any friends who are unsure about EV's then send them along. They have one in Stafford too.
Our reason for the visit was that as well as our MG4 we have a BMW 320i which is coming up to 3 years old. Mrs S hates the MG4 and refuses to drive it because of all the button pressing to disable the LKA etc and the unpredictability of what the software will do next. So while there we looked at the Polestar 2 (too boxy) Kia EV6 (interior reminded her of the MG4) Tesla M3 and BMW i4e40. These last two we test drove.
The best way to describe the i4 is as a normal BMW 3 or 4 series but with an electric motor. Every control is in the same place as the petrol car. Everything works like a petrol car. It's the first EV either of us has been in that hasn't tried to reinvent the car. Normality resumed for Mrs S.
The Tesla we drove was the model 3 dual motor version. Both of us were surprised at just how good it is. The ride seemed good. The handling is good. The interior is light and airy and the seats are comfortable. The only downsides were the amount of road noise and the various rattles. This was an older car (can't remember if it was a 20 0r 22 reg) and the latest version is supposed to be quieter. Also I didn't like not having a display directly in front with the basics of speed etc. Having to take my eyes off the road to look at the screen to the left didn't seem sensible.
So the upshot is that I am now tasked with selling the 320i and sourcing a used low milage i4. The MG4 will stay until the finance deal finishes in 2025 then it will be returned. One car will then be sufficient as we are both retired.
Just as an add-on, I saw an i4 available down between Birmingham and Bristol. Checking the route on ABRP suggests I could get it back to Ayr with one stop of 16 mins and one of 19. It takes me longer than that for a coffee and pee break at the services without refuelling!
The way we drive is changing. Find out about electric and alternative fuel cars at the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre, Glasgow Clydeside.
