Delay paying £190 car tax on EV until April 2026 (action needed before the end of March 2024)

You all have to pay tax ? wow , I was under the impression EV tax was zero !!!!!!:eek:
Until the 1st of April and then it will cost all us zero emissions EV drivers £185 for 12 months.
This has come under a LOT of debate on the forum when it was first announced months ago.
Follow the advice above if it applies to you.

But presumably you can wait until later in the year or Jan-Mar 2025 and then follow the same process?

No, basically 1 April 2025 is when the annual £180 payment starts. So by re-taxing now in March 2024 at £0, you will again tax next March 2025 at £0. £180 payments start in April 2025. So then in March 2026 you will have to pay £180. But you have saved £180 for a whole year.

Grrr. I don't know if there is any way round this now.

I read elsewhere that one should re-tax in March for this reason, then my letter arrived, and like an idiot I did it with the letter. I don't know how to undo that now.

What if I SORNed the car for 24 hours? No?

Yes, if you SORN the car, it cancells all tax. You then have to re-tax it, from what they said on the facebook group, you can 1) re-tax it online 5 days after the SORN, or 2) re-tax it at a post office the next day. I'm certain that would work Rolfe. Obviously you can't keep the car on a road or public place (like a car park) for the day/s it is SORNed.

I sorned mine then retaxed it the same day at the post office as it's only round the corner.
You have to wait 5 days to SORN or tax it online if you've already just done either online.
You can do as @MartinSEsr says above.

I'll try it! This will work any time this month, right? I just have to find a weekday I don't need the car? Tuesday is looking good.

Actually, though, looking at that image I posted, I wonder if it might work if I just waited more than five days after I taxed it.

I’ve just re-taxed my car without messing about sorning etc.
I went on to “tax my car “ found the bit about taxing without any letter from them and just filled in the reg number, name and postcode and the eleven character number off the log book.
the new tax proof came back straight away.

My problem is that I taxed the damn thing yesterday when the letter came in, without quite realising that was a bad idea. But if I leave it more than five days, things may become clearer.
No I think you’re spot on are you not?
You’ve paid yesterday (before April 1st)
Therefore you’ll be due to tax again next March for the 12 months before the tax increase is due April 1st 2025, so it’ll be covered at £0 until March ‘26.

Couldn't you still tax it for 6 months in September (is 6 months tax still an option) ?

She probably used the reminder which comes early so possibly to start on April 1st.

Hi, in April 2025, EV cars switch from £0 per year car tax to £180. If your car is registered in March, you'll avoid paying it next year. But if registered in April, May or after, you just miss the cut-off and will pay £180 on renewal next year.

This method delays it for a year to March 2026. You pay £0 now, £0 in March 2025 then £180 in March 2026. The £180 payment starts on 1 April 2025.

I went to the "tax your car" government website, and re-taxed mine. You need the V5C registration document 11 digit code, I clicked on "I don't have a tax renewal letter" and agreed "I know I'm taxing it before I have to". But I re-taxed it early, in March instead of June, at a cost of £0.

It took a couple of days to update, but checking on my car's tax status, it has now switched renewal from 1 June 2024 to 1 March 2025, so therefore I avoid paying £180 for a year.

It took 5 mins, and I recommend doing it, there's no reason for everyone whose tax (currently £0) is due after April in 're-taxing' now for £0 and delaying the payment of £180 for a year. But it HAS to be done in March, ie now. The car tax web site warns you you will be paying twice by taxing early - but you just pay £0.00 twice!

I got this off an MG facebook group where they're all doing it, i tried it and it worked. You don't need to SORN the car for a day which some people thought.

Martin
Thanks so much, Martin. Definitely gets my vote for Most Useful Post EVER!(y):)

Mine was due on 1st June so I did this yesterday. Just checked the official record and it has already updated to 1st March 2025 :)
Mine was due for renewal on the first of April 2024 ( so expired at mid night 31st March ).
I did the on line renewal last night and guess what, the paper copy arrived this morning !.
I have just checked the data base and the system has already updated.
Renewal now due 1st April 2025.
First date of registration on the renewal document is March 2022 so I think I would have just made it even if I had waited for the paper reminder - Hey - Ho !.
When I renew again next March of 2025 this would have just missed the dead line for the April increase of £185 anyway, regardless of the renewal I did yesterday I believe.
