Charging issue with PodPoint 50kW

I am glad it is not only me that is nervous about using CCS public charger. I was lucky as when mine bricked it was a sunny Saturday morning and the AA arrived in 30 mins and had me going again in 10.

Sorry to say but the MG ZS EV 2022 is of pre-production beta standard.

So I visited a Lidl the other day that has a paid PodPoint rapid charger. I followed the instructions correctly but it popped up saying there was an issue communicating with the vehicle. PodPoint support blamed it on the issue some MG owners had previously encountered with their cars being bricked by rapid chargers. Not sure this is the case but just thought I would see if anyone else has encountered this or if it is probably an issue with their machine.
We had a similar issue with a LIdl Pod Point in Colchester with my wife's VW e-Up! That charger was subsequently reported as not working by others who tried. It might in our case have been caused by the car - e-Up!s sometime switch off rapid charging immediately - and unlike MGs the solution is to have the car fired up when connecting. Once charging, it can be shut down and locked.

I got a second reply from MG customer service:

This has definitely put my mind at ease

“ MG ZS EV will accept up to 75kWh using a DC/DC rapid charger.”

That is not correct either. I have had 92kW charging on my ZS EV. The rate tested by Fastnet was 95kW in ideal conditions.

All EVs are BETA standard. The Tesla software version screen actually states that.

Actually, all new cars are effectively at Beta standard.
There is very little real world testing done on a new model. That's what the intial owners are there for.

Hi guys today was my 1st time using public charger at Lidl but having error message despite several attempts. I both tried CCS and the Type 2 socket but got the same error.

So I turned off the car, opened the flap, grabbed the CCS cable and plugged it in, opened the podpoint app and confirmed the charge, it shows the timer on the screen that it starts charging but after a few seconds, the error message appears (photo attached)

At first I am a bit nervous thinking it would bricked my car (had AA number ready) but luckily it didn’t.

Anyone knows what went wrong or had similar issue?

I've had this happen a few times. All I had to do was just activate the charge via the app a good few times before it took.

This is the exact problem I had, tried several times and just went home in the end.

I had similar, but not identical issues with the Podpoint CCS charger at Lidl in Colchester. In that case it was with my wife's VW e-Up! We decamped to a nearby Instavolt charger and no problem.

Thanks Marc. Yes I did the same, activate the charge via app several times until I gave up. It states charging on the app though but error message appears after few minutes.

Seems some EV’s are not compatible with Podpoint then? But I am baffled that some members here are using Podpoint with no problems..🤷🏻‍♂️

I've not had a problem with Podpoint AC charging (VW e-Up1) only with one attempt to charge with CCS. To do so, I had to put money on my account - £20 - so I'm hoping I can use that sometime...

I also had to put money on my account to even attempt to charge. After the charge wouldn't start I asked for a refund

I know it's not usually necessary on DC but could locking the car initiate the handshake maybe ?

I just tried MFG 150kw today just to convince myself that the car is not faulty when doing rapid charge before accepting defeat and visit my dealership as we are planning to go on holiday in Cornwall for a 300 mile drive in two weeks time.

At first attempt, charging stopped after 5mins, (yep here we go again) to my relief no VCS fault on the dash “But” the cable is stuck and can’t pull it off. I called MFG helpline, told me to press unlock button for 10sec which didn’t work, press unlock/lock x5 but no luck.
Lastly, I was told to open the bonnet and pull the emergency release cable loop (didn’t know that) heard a click and finally pull the cable out.👇🏻

I was then instructed to wait 2-3mins and
they will reboot the CCS charge port and plug again the cable to the car. I anxiously waited 5 then 10mins if the charging will stop again but fortunately all went well until it reached 100% in 39mins from 34%. I don’t know what happened there if my ZS “bricked” the charging port or the car did not communicate well that caused the interruption but atleast I know theres no fault with the car when doing rapid charge and maybe stay away with Podpoint for now.
