I bought chrome mirror caps which just fit over the top of the existing caps. The new caps are just held in place with adhesive tape and have been on for over a year without fail.
I can't understand why you need to take your mirror apart, have you actually tried fitting them over...

Fitted chrome on the top of the doors. The wind deflectors also claim to reduce wind noise. I don't think the car suffers from wind noise but is is something that some testers have commented on...
All the chrome bits I fitted are just press fit as they come with sticky strips. The MG rear door chrome strip fits exactly the same way and NONE of the bits I fitted have yet fallen off. I fitted the same parts on my ICE MG ZS which I had for 5 months before trading it in and no problems there...
I know, but except for the seat retrimming which cost a £1000 the rest of the items were under £30 each. I am waiting for some chrome wind deflectors for the door, see link, I will let everyone know if indeed as claimed they reduce wind noise. As I am buying the car and not leasing it I don't...
