breakdown
In electronics, electrical breakdown or dielectric breakdown is a process that occurs when an electrically insulating material (a dielectric), subjected to a high enough voltage, suddenly becomes a conductor and current flows through it. All insulating materials undergo breakdown when the electric field caused by an applied voltage exceeds the material's dielectric strength. The voltage at which a given insulating object becomes conductive is called its breakdown voltage and, in addition to its dielectric strength, depends on its size and shape, and the location on the object at which the voltage is applied. Under sufficient electrical potential, electrical breakdown can occur within solids, liquids, or gases (and theoretically even in a vacuum). However, the specific breakdown mechanisms are different for each kind of dielectric medium.
Electrical breakdown may be a momentary event (as in an electrostatic discharge), or may lead to a continuous electric arc if protective devices fail to interrupt the current in a power circuit. In this case electrical breakdown can cause catastrophic failure of electrical equipment, and fire hazards.
Hello all,
Walked out to my 2024 MG ZS EV after 2 weeks not driving, pressed the key fob...nothing. Thought it might be dead, changed the fob battery, still nothing. Used the emergency key to get in, tried to start, dead as...
Waiting for RAC to give me an arrival time but, in the meantime...
Hi
Needed a tow truck last week, battery went completely dead (12v)
I replaced the battery and again on the way to work the warning came up again, I am assuming that the battery is not recharging while in motion
Waiting on another tow truck, any ideas before I get it to a MG garage?
My cousin broke down in France and had to leave he car there for repair. Something about electronic stability control. Now it’s been repaired, she has to go and get it, at her cost. Does that sound right?
How many times do you have to apply the 10mm remove negative lead fix to make you MG ZS starting working like a proper car again.
I've had
parked car, come back - nothing works. 10mm spanner, everything works.
First time this happened in 2023 I called the breakdown, the chap did some basics ODB...
Our 2 year old mg5 broke down in August last year:I could swith it “off” ie light remained on, then when tried switching on again got the following warning message: “HV battery shutdown”.To cut a long story short since then Holdcroft’s in Warrington have changed:

The media...
Hi all,
Long-time reader here! I’ve been driving an MG5 Trophy as a company car for just over 18 months now. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed it – it’s comfortable, drives well, and has been totally reliable… until a few weeks ago when it completely died on me. Buckle up – it’s a bit of a story...
As you all probably know i ordered our new MG3 hybrid, I finally had a test drive of it today which was an experience to say the least!
The car at first was lovely to drive and smooth which was great I was happy with that! We came up to a roundabout and the car flashed a big red banner for less...
As I am purchasing a second hand MG5 from a Ford dealer - it has MG service history - does the AA breakdown cover automatically transfer to me?
Thanks!
Hi All,
Has any had recent experience and advise on the warranty with MG, our MG5 EV last week went and came up with various faults, parking brake system failure, cruise control system failure, and few others, I also experienced whist driving the car seem to pulse as in speed up/slow down in an...
Hi. I was driving my 16month old MG5 up to inverness from central scotland last Monday and stopped in Aviemore to charge.
Tried the Tesla Supercharger - it wouldnt recognise the car (i see elsewhere on this forum this is a known issue). Tried a BP pulse charger - same issue. Went down the road...
I recently had my ZS EV break down on my drive with a control unit error code
I called MGAssistance who sent an AA engineer.
He was unable to fix the issue and said the car needed to be taken to a MG main dealer for repair.
But trying to find a MG dealer to accept a roadside breakdown was a...
I broke down on my drive on Sat 4th Nov with the error message Vehicle Control Fault on my ZS EV
I called MG Assistance where an AA mechanic turned up. After trying all he could he said that it needs recovering to MG.
imagine my surprise when my local dealer where I recently had it serviced...
I’ve been getting repeated breakdowns in my MG5 pre face lift LR. I get “dcdc charge fault” followed by “auto hold fault” and then “high voltage battery disconnect” at which point the car stops. Dealer had the car for 12 weeks and saw the fault but couldn’t fix it. Got it back 2 weeks ago and...
Hello all,
Just picked up our MG4 six weeks ago or so, the dealer said it has free 12 months AA breakdown cover, but when I rang the breakdown customer service number to confirm the cover duration, they said the cover lasts till 1st Jan 2026! which is much longer than the 12 months the dealer...
Gone are the days when I used to keep a selection of tools, wire, rope, WD40, selection of fuses etc. in a small toolbox in the boot together with a knuckle bar with a wheel nut socket attached just in case of a breakdown.
What do you keep in MG4 in case of a breakdown or emergency?
I have a...
