breakdown

In electronics, electrical breakdown or dielectric breakdown is a process that occurs when an electrically insulating material (a dielectric), subjected to a high enough voltage, suddenly becomes a conductor and current flows through it. All insulating materials undergo breakdown when the electric field caused by an applied voltage exceeds the material's dielectric strength. The voltage at which a given insulating object becomes conductive is called its breakdown voltage and, in addition to its dielectric strength, depends on its size and shape, and the location on the object at which the voltage is applied. Under sufficient electrical potential, electrical breakdown can occur within solids, liquids, or gases (and theoretically even in a vacuum). However, the specific breakdown mechanisms are different for each kind of dielectric medium.
Electrical breakdown may be a momentary event (as in an electrostatic discharge), or may lead to a continuous electric arc if protective devices fail to interrupt the current in a power circuit. In this case electrical breakdown can cause catastrophic failure of electrical equipment, and fire hazards.

MG dealership problem after a breakdown

Hi. I was driving my 16month old MG5 up to inverness from central scotland last Monday and stopped in Aviemore to charge. Tried the Tesla Supercharger - it wouldnt recognise the car (i see elsewhere on this forum this is a known issue). Tried a BP pulse charger - same issue. Went down the road...

    If you break down, beware!

I recently had my ZS EV break down on my drive with a control unit error code I called MGAssistance who sent an AA engineer. He was unable to fix the issue and said the car needed to be taken to a MG main dealer for repair. But trying to find a MG dealer to accept a roadside breakdown was a...

    MG Assistance -or Not!

I broke down on my drive on Sat 4th Nov with the error message Vehicle Control Fault on my ZS EV I called MG Assistance where an AA mechanic turned up. After trying all he could he said that it needs recovering to MG. imagine my surprise when my local dealer where I recently had it serviced...

Anyone else getting these errors leading to breakdown?

I’ve been getting repeated breakdowns in my MG5 pre face lift LR. I get “dcdc charge fault” followed by “auto hold fault” and then “high voltage battery disconnect” at which point the car stops. Dealer had the car for 12 weeks and saw the fault but couldn’t fix it. Got it back 2 weeks ago and...

AA Breakdown duration, more than 12 months?

Hello all, Just picked up our MG4 six weeks ago or so, the dealer said it has free 12 months AA breakdown cover, but when I rang the breakdown customer service number to confirm the cover duration, they said the cover lasts till 1st Jan 2026! which is much longer than the 12 months the dealer...

    Breakdown/Emergency Kit

Gone are the days when I used to keep a selection of tools, wire, rope, WD40, selection of fuses etc. in a small toolbox in the boot together with a knuckle bar with a wheel nut socket attached just in case of a breakdown. What do you keep in MG4 in case of a breakdown or emergency? I have a...
