engine

An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert one or more forms of energy into mechanical energy.Available energy sources include potential energy (e.g. energy of the Earth's gravitational field as exploited in hydroelectric power generation), heat energy (e.g. geothermal), chemical energy, electric potential and nuclear energy (from nuclear fission or nuclear fusion). Many of these processes generate heat as an intermediate energy form, so heat engines have special importance. Some natural processes, such as atmospheric convection cells convert environmental heat into motion (e.g. in the form of rising air currents). Mechanical energy is of particular importance in transportation, but also plays a role in many industrial processes such as cutting, grinding, crushing, and mixing.
Mechanical heat engines convert heat into work via various thermodynamic processes. The internal combustion engine is perhaps the most common example of a mechanical heat engine, in which heat from the combustion of a fuel causes rapid pressurisation of the gaseous combustion products in the combustion chamber, causing them to expand and drive a piston, which turns a crankshaft. Unlike internal combustion engines, a reaction engine (such as a jet engine) produces thrust by expelling reaction mass, in accordance with Newton's third law of motion.
Apart from heat engines, electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical motion, pneumatic motors use compressed air, and clockwork motors in wind-up toys use elastic energy. In biological systems, molecular motors, like myosins in muscles, use chemical energy to create forces and ultimately motion (a chemical engine, but not a heat engine).
Chemical heat engines which employ air (ambient atmospheric gas) as a part of the fuel reaction are regarded as airbreathing engines. Chemical heat engines designed to operate outside of Earth's atmosphere (e.g. rockets, deeply submerged submarines) need to carry an additional fuel component called the oxidizer (although there exist super-oxidizers suitable for use in rockets, such as fluorine, a more powerful oxidant than oxygen itself); or the application needs to obtain heat by non-chemical means, such as by means of nuclear reactions.

High revs when overtaking or accelerating from slip road.

Hi, first post been reading and garnering information from the forum. Can't see anything about this, lately when I put foot down to accelerate to over take or entering from slip road. The engine revs really high sometimes showing at 5000rpm it's almost as if car thinks it should drop a gear...

    Resolution- Engine Emissions fault

My car went into Glyn Hopkins St Albans today, and they carried out the software update which has cured the Emissions fault. My car was the first one they updated, and I think whilst the fault was present the fuel economy appeared to worsen, which could have been due to the oxygen sensor not...

    MG3 Hybrid Oil Change

Ok, so are you happy to leave the factory oil in your MG3 Hybrid engine until the 10,000km service? Not me. I am used to having an early break in oil service on new cars and 1000km is pretty standard on some manufacturers engines. So i decided to get that factory oil out of my MG3 Hybrid at...

    Emissions fault

Hi all. I have a MG3+Hybrid. I've only done 1000 miles and an engine light has come on which, according to the manual is an Emissions fault. Anybody know what this is about and any other input would be grateful to hear, as I'm a bit worried, very annoyed and taking a big sigh right now.

MG HS PHEV mpg/range with battery depleted / Engine only

Hi All, I'm seriously considering a MG HS PHEV but the engine efficiency concerns me and PHEV WLTP/EPA are all so skewed as the undertake the test with a fully charged battery, longer on EV mode the higher the mpg (less fuel burnt) so it's worse than the dieselgate days. Anyway can anyone...

Zs ev 52000 miles suddenly very noisy in travel, sounds like a noisy engine ??

Mg zs ev,52000 miles Suddenly developed a worrying noise in travel, it increases in motor revolutions (not road speed) sounds like it has a noisy engine now?? has anyone else had a similar frightening problem

    Ice fault.

Hi all PHEV owners Has anyone had an engine fault message? It comes with a yellow picture of the ICE engine on the top right of the screen. I've had 2 in 2 months. Dealer says I'm not using the ICE enough?? The 63 kms charge is perfect for me with occasional longer trips when it converts to...

Should there be a cover over ‘engine’ bay

Hi guys, Just bought a 2020 azA EV exclusive. That appears to be no cover over the top of the engine bay? Is this correct? I have an MG5 as well and the ‘engine’ is cover by a plastic cover. Thanks, Simon

Solid rubber bar showing under engine

I have recently noticed a solid rubber bar showing under the car. I have looked at other similar models as mine but they do not show this under their cars. Does anyone know what this is and what caused it
