solar
Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly using concentrated solar power. Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect. Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and solar tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight to a hot spot, often to drive a steam turbine.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. Since then, as the cost of solar electricity has fallen, grid-connected solar PV systems have grown more or less exponentially. Millions of installations and gigawatt-scale photovoltaic power stations continue to be built, with half of new generation capacity being solar in 2021.In 2021 solar generated 3.8% (1040 TWh) of the world's electricity-compared to 1% (253 TWh) in 2015 when the Paris Agreement to limit climate change was signed. Wind and solar generated over 10% of the world's electricity in 2021. Along with onshore wind, the cheapest levelised cost of electricity is utility-scale solar.Much more low carbon power, such as solar, is urgently needed to limit climate change, but the International Energy Agency said in 2022 that more effort was needed for grid integration and the mitigation of policy, regulation and financing challenges.
Good news for those of us without Intelligent Octopus Compatible chargers!
They have discontinued the 'Octopus lite' tariff for those on Octopus Go and are allowing people to use the standard export tariff.
This was noticed by Tim of "Tim and Kat" fame :
So we can import at 8.5p and export...
Recently when charging my ZS mk1 via the Zappi and using the intelligent go programme / schedule, I get a message on my Iphone stating unable to control the charge. On checking the car battery in the morning I find the battery has been charged, but it looks like it has been charged to 100%. Any...
We are in the process of building a new house. My commute will increase to about 110 km a day so I'm assuming I will be charging almost daily, especially if I want to use some excess solar power (I work in education so I'll be home by 4 pm most days). We are looking at 14kWh solar system, which...
My Zappi charger has been in situ for about 2 years with no issues until i invested in a 5.2kw Giv Energy home battery to go along with my existing solar panels. I'm on the Intelligent octopus go tariff from 23:30 to 0630 for car / home batttery charging. I choose eco + charge on the Zappi, the...
There looks like there is an enormous amount of electrical and solar knowledge on the forum. So I’m hoping someone can clear something up for me.
Our old 5kWh solar system (panels, inverter and racking ) is being removed on Tuesday. And a new 17.2kWh with battery backup system (more on that...
My house has a fairly large solar system with a battery bank that allows me to be off grid most of the time between March and October one of the characteristics of the studer inverter puts out a voltage on the negative that doesn't seem to bother anything but one thing I have just noticed when...
have ohme updated their app so that no one can set price cap on intelligent octopus tariff ?
For a year I have been using the spend cap feature absolutely with no problems but it now looks as if I can’t do that any more. Anyone else have that issue?
The reason I do this is because it’s more...
I fit in the group of people that cannot install their own charger. I own my house, but it's a part of a home owners association in the Netherlands in which my neighbors are afraid of EVs charging, catching on fire and burning them alive, what to say about media.
Also, running a cable is...
Today I signed up for Tomato Energy Lifestyle. It looks as if I will be saving a decent amount of money over my current Intelligent Octopus Go, I have been a loyal customer of Octopus for many years but recent events on here have given me reason to look around and I was amazed to find this...
I have sung the praises of Octopus for more years than I care to remember but now I'm leaving.
Tomato Energy, I hadnt heard of them but they came up during a search for a business energy supplier. Their business deal blew all of the others out of the water by quite some margin. I was intrigued...
Any thoughts on whether there is any real difference? Currently looking at a Zappi which has both tethered and untethered options.
It will be in the garage (as that's where I park my car - I know it's unusual... ?), and I'd probably just buy a type2 cable to sit there anyway even with...
Just as a matter of interest. I completed my “off grid” solar installation for my car charging. I have harvested 450 miles from the sun since it went live on 4th May, l make that about 9 miles a day on average and given we haven’t had the best of summers so far (I live in Devon) and I’m...
Thought I might share with you our setup which now is paying us up to £30 per month:
The key to all of this is the differential between Octopus Intelligent Go and SEG payments from Octopus, (or any other provider). 7p inbound against 15p export with Octopus. You need to ensure that you export...
Dear colleagues. I will be soon owner of a MG 4 Explore version ( Romanian name for the standard range with 51kWh battery).
I would like to know from the existing owners of this 51 kWh model if the max power of 6,6kW as it is specified in the technical datasheet, can be reached on a charging...
