solar

Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly using concentrated solar power. Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect. Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and solar tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight to a hot spot, often to drive a steam turbine.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. Since then, as the cost of solar electricity has fallen, grid-connected solar PV systems have grown more or less exponentially. Millions of installations and gigawatt-scale photovoltaic power stations continue to be built, with half of new generation capacity being solar in 2021.In 2021 solar generated 3.8% (1040 TWh) of the world's electricity-compared to 1% (253 TWh) in 2015 when the Paris Agreement to limit climate change was signed. Wind and solar generated over 10% of the world's electricity in 2021. Along with onshore wind, the cheapest levelised cost of electricity is utility-scale solar.Much more low carbon power, such as solar, is urgently needed to limit climate change, but the International Energy Agency said in 2022 that more effort was needed for grid integration and the mitigation of policy, regulation and financing challenges.

New ZS EV owner, wants to add solar .....

Hi all, first post and I'm glad that there is a community dedicated to the MG EV range. My wife and I are 2 days into our EV adventure and I can't help pondering the viability of adding a large flexible solar panel atop my MG to assist with powering it's 12v systems. Not expecting huge...

    Solar panel charger?

Does anyone have a solar panel that they plug in to charge their ZS EV? (Not the permanent ones mounted on a house) If so, how decent are they? I expect they won’t charge much but may be wrong….

Heat pump, solar and wall battery is this the future?

6 years ago we bought a semi detached house with 8 solar panels. Few months later we have purchased our first EV to take advantage of the solar. We use FiT getting around £850 per year. Today we have one full EV MG4 and phev for caravan. Our gas boiler is faulty and will be definitely getting...

Charging at home with Solar Panels

I have a White Trophy on order and went for a test drive yesterday, very impressed, can't wait for the car to arrive. After the test drive, the dealer rep and myself were looking through the numerous pages on the infotainment screen and on the Charging Screen where you can set the maximum charge...

Solar diverters are they worth it, well I for one didn’t and still don’t think so.

For anyone that is thinking of having or has solar PV, you might find this video interesting in deciding whether or not to add a solar diverter along to it as sometimes these are an unnecessary expense. On June 20th 2022 a podcast about solar and storage batteries was done on the MGEVs...

    Solar mode on ev.energy app

Has anyone with panels tried this new software feature on their ZS and Rolec? How effective do you find it at biaising charge toward solar over the grid? Does it go on and off continuously, thus falling foul of the charging ECU shutting off permanently once the charge has ended, that is until...

Can I charge on type 2 with 5kW Solar Inverter?

I hope to get an ZS EV (waiting list and that kind of things). I understood it can charge from a home charger up to 7Kw. I want to charge it though from solar and the only solar solutions I can find are inverters up to 5Kw. Anything above that is 3 phase inverters. Also I believe 3 phase...

    Question: Solar

Hi peeps... Opinion sought about charging from solar,,,, specifically if (when) solar drops below 1.4kWh and the car stops charging, then a few minutes later goes 1.4kWh plus and the car starts recharging. Does this matter to the battery? (At no time will the car hit either 0% or 100%)...

My tale of woe with solar pv plus a word of advice

Some of you may remember I have been asking for quotes to extend my currant PV array for a couple of months now, and have found this difficult to say the least. Is solar and battery storage worth the cost?

So i'm moving house soon and wanted to get Solar and battery storage. But after looking at the cost and googling it people say it'll take something like 12-15 years to really get your money back in the UK (cheshire). So is it really worth the cost? If it breaks within 10 years I'll have to...

So we've had some quotes and they've basically knocked the idea of having solar PV on the house roof on the head due to the dormer. Direct Solar PV to HV charging?

I have a spare 10-panel array of solar panels that in series will give approx 360v DC / 2700w maximum output in direct sunlight.
